Do hens crow?

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Michael has given you great advice!

I had two sebright hens who indeed were crowing. They for sure weren't roosters as they were laying eggs but they were crowing. So yes, hens can crow.

I have a medium sized mixed flock including a trio of exchequer leghorns... a cockerel and 2 hens. The hens never crowed when they were in with the others but when I moved the trio into the garden away from the main flock, one of the hens started crowing mid morning immediately after the cockerel. It was like she was mimicking him. She did it almost every day and would crow 5 or 6 times each day until the cockerel was taken by a predator. I haven't heard her crow since. It always seemed like she did it to compete with him though rather than something that she spontaneously had to do. Or maybe she just liked singing a duet. My other cockerel, Harry, sings the egg song when his girls start it up, so why shouldn't a hen crow.... I'm all for equality!

In reality though, the others are right and you most likely have two roosters.
