Hey all - Do hens sometimes kill their day old chicks on purpose? Our Lavender Orpington had her 3rd baby hatch this morning but by this evening I found it dead with blood around it's beak? The other two chicks are 4 and 3 days old consecutively with no issues. She and her babies are in a separate area of the chicken coop and no other chickens can get to them?

Yes. Some hens will kill their a chick if they think there is a problem with it.
If they assault/kill all their chicks then the hen may just not make a suitable mother. If a hen kills one, or maybe two but is fine with the others then it's possible that there was something wrong with the chick.
