Do I have mites? what to do?

There are several posts on this site where many folks have discussed the use of different types of Ivermectin. Including ridding chickens of lice and worms.

You do not have the right to tell me to knock off the "misinformation".

Ivomec Eprinex worked on my hens. Let the OP decide how to use any or all of the advice given.
This site is full of misinformation, heck, I've posted some myself. Let's both do an experiment together... let's go find a bird with feather lice, take pictures, administer ivermectin and follow up with pictures the next day, that would be fun, right? I'm sure one of my Faverolles or Cochins has some lice again.

As for ivermectin treating worms, there's a properly documented study that says it's an ineffective wormer in poultry.

Ivermectin as a bird anthelmintic--trials with naturally infected domestic fowl.

Oksanen A, Nikander S.
Abstract

To evaluate the use of ivermectin as a bird anthelmintic, 29 White Leghorn hens naturally infected with Ascaridia spp., Heterakis spp. and Capillaria spp. were treated with 0.2, 2 or 6 mg/kg intramuscularly or 0.2 or 0.8 mg/kg orally. Faecal samples were collected before treatment and at autopsy, 2, 6, or 16 days after treatment, when the intestines were also examined for helminths. None of the treatments gave satisfactory anthelmintic results

Kathy, I've used both ivermectin pour on and eprinex in the past....as wormers on several occasions, and ivermectin pour on once for lice. After using either product against worms, I observed large roundworms in feces 2 months later on 2 seperate occasions. The pour on did not kill the lice at all. Sevin dust took care of them right away. I gave away the ivermectin and eprinex to a guy I knew that had cows.

To the OP , I am sorry this discussion turned sour. I never tried to argue, I used the Eprinex..... it worked on my hens. Just a suggestion from me to a poster asking for help.... I trust you can make your choice about what advice to use. Please keep us posted :)

I just wish there was a way to show people that it doesn't work on lice and the only way I can think of is to do an experiment with pictures. AS for the worms, I believe you (and there's the abstract

), so I won't ever rely on it as a wormer, but I will continue to use it for mites until someone shows me that it doesn't work on those. But even then, if you're going to catch your bird, why not dust and de-worm with something that works, right? Like Sevin and Valbazen or Safeguard. Preaching to the choir, lol.

Well I appreciate all the comments. Didn't mean for it to be so controversial.

I went ahead and tried the Prozap poultry dust on the two birds that I for sure saw the lice on. I also treated the rest of the flock just in case although I didn't see any visible signs of lice on everyone else.

I basically just held the bird under my arm and put some powder in my other hand and lightly patted the vent area, under the wings and under the breast area.

Good. Get the back too. The little ******** scurry along the back. Do it again in 7 days. Those dusts are messy, eh? Treat the coop soon too after you clean it out. I recommend a good permethrin spray or Ravap EC to treat the coop with.

They'll be much happier!

Yes messy indeed. My white rock is definitely mad at me for dusting her, I think she even started growling at me when I put her down.

I was trying to do it as quick as I could with all the flapping around and all. I'll have to clean the coop tomorrow. I got home late and it was a race with the clock to sundown. I also bought some poultry protector spray so I will spray the walls and nesting boxes when I clean them out.
