Do I need to clip their wings?

This may be a dumb question but... My husband and I are going to be installing a 6' privacy fence (we have a 3 ft picket fence right now) and I was wondering if I'll still have to clip my chickens' wings with the fence this high? I have an Orphington, Plymouth Rock, Wyandotte, Black sexlink, and Rhode Island Red. This is my first time owning chicks and I'm not sure what to expect! Thanks :)

IMO you would not need to clip wings.

I think 6' should be high enough to confine the breeds you have as long as there are no trees or structures to allow them to get a higher jump or climb to the fence. Also, a privacy fence would prevent them from seeing exciting things on the other side to entice a break out.

But I would like to see opinions of those with more experience than me.

No I don't think you should cut the wings. They are quite heavy breed chickens and should not be able to fly up that height easily..... but make sure you don't have trees or anything up against the fence or they will use these as ladders to hop up.

I agree with the previous posters, I wouldn't worry too much about them flying that high.

You can always trim their flight feathers if it becomes a problem, it's very easy to do.

No question is dumb, by the way. ;)
Ask away! That's what BYC is here for.

Best of luck to you and your flock.

Based upon what I've been reading from long-time chicken owners, you should be fine. One caveat experienced folks tend to offer, is something along the lines, "it depends upon your flock". My experience is the heavier the bird, the less high they care or can fly. Like already suggested, try it out with just the fence and if there is a problem, you could clip wings.
