Do I need to rename Opal?

its hard to tell when they are young if they are really pullets. You can tell the seller that they were both roos... but... honestly... its hard to tell so I wouldn't be too mad at them. They probably didn't intentionally sell you boys.

The gentleman was quite older, so I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt, but you would think he would know considering how manay chickens he had had when I got there. I will keep Opal/Owen for sure, as I do like his coloring and I have no issues with having an EE Roo adding his genetics to my little backyard flock, I was planning on doing some hatching next spring. Yesterday, he was already trying to ahhhhhh, make friends with a few of the others from his group. I'm going to seperate out my Marans, Welsummer, and Ameracuana hens and roo into a seperate coop next spring for a little olive egger fun, so my roo ratio in this coop wont be bad then, it's just making it through the winter!! I would guess he can pass on the blue egg gene since his rose comb is looking pretty prominant?

Now I'm wondering about the RIR they sold me as a pullet. I'm going get a few shots today of the rest of the 6 and see what you all think. If it's really looking bad, then I will contact him.

Poor Hinky has no real purpose other than a pet. He should never reproduce, as his malformation is genetic. Sorry, both males.

That isn't a rose comb. Its not even a really good pea comb. Looks like what you get when you cross a single combed bird with a pea combed one.

I have an Opal, but she is a lavender Coch'Anver (porcelain d'Anver x lavender bantam cochin)

Yeppers. Hinky will need to be removed in some way. He's a cute little guy, but those genetics aren't moving on. The reality is I don't have a place for him that isn't in the general population so if I can't find a home for him freezer camp it may have to be. I'm going to start a new thread with the rest of the bunch now....

while I do agree that scissor beaks are genetic and as a flaw it shouldn't be passed on... but that doesn't mean that he cant make a good pet! He doesn't have to be removed. lol

Well if you don't want any of Hinky's genetics to be passed on he needs to be removed from the flock. He can make a good pet, but you shouldn't incubate any eggs from any hens/pullets he is housed with.
