Do I want this rooster? Update: He killed a hen Update: Sunday

I always give my roosters a nice head pat when they are on the roost. I wouldn't necessarily pick him up but you can "groom" his head (mine seem to like it, even my grouchy dominant rooster).

i have been following this thread and i'm so glad that you've kept him and that he is sweet to your hens. he's so handsome i can hardly stand it!!! more pix! more pix!

did you settle on a name yet???

I would not pick him up just yet...I would start off by touching him...rubbing his chest, pats on the back and such...let him get used to you.

Good luck with that handsome boy.

He does seem to be quite sweet. When I put them to bed at night, I toss treats in the pen. He runs around making sure that everyone has something to eat.
That behavior is really fun to watch. Haven't quite settled on a name yet, but I think it's pretty close. Glad you are enjoying his story. More to come.

Good advice. The last 2 nights well after dark, I have just gone up, entered the coop and talked quietly to him. (and the girls too) That's the closest I have gotten
and it seems wise. Have you seen the spurs this fellow has? Once my chicken friend saw the spurs, she told me he is not as young as I thought he might be.

Yes, Anne! I had noticed his spurs! I'd venture to say that he's at least 2, maybe 3 years of age. Just a guess mind you. But he's definitely no spring chick either! And all of that dancing, and all of that pointing out choice morsels to the girls, all speak of a well experienced roo.

My boys are only three and a half months old now and they're just beginning to learn the finer aspects of wooing the girls and drawing attention to themselves.

Go slow and easy with him and watch his reactions. If he doesn't seem to mind a little head or tummy scratch, then go with that for a few days. Build slowly, earn his trust, and before you know it, you may just have an absolute sweetie pie on your hands. One can always hope so! And even if he never becomes affectionate towards you, be happy that your girls finally have a man about the house that they can feel comfortable with and proud to have around. From here on out, anything more is just icing on the cake!

Good luck and please keep us posted on how he progresses!
