Advice to the OP. Just walk up and tell him "I'M BUYING PEAHENS! ...just thought you should know. I think it might be the last animals I buy, for a while but I can't guarantee that. Next time I get so excited about a new animal I will tell you before I buy it but I can't say I won't buy it because you don't want it."
However, with this tactic, you must expect your DH to come home with a new hunting rifle, because fair's fair. He should, however, tell you before he buys it.
Some animals could be snuck in, with no one noticing. An extra two chickens in a herd of 18? Once you get your spouse to refer to them as "all those chickens" you can feel free to get as many as you want.
