do my chickens have worms?

One will not always be able to see evidence of worms in droppings, vet with scopes included, which is why I think fecals are a waste of money.

Hi,
Do you then worm your chickens ?
With what and how often ?
Thanks.

Read through the thread and use one of the two listed by Dawg.

I use the Valbezan, worm twice year spring and fall, you have to do the followup dose 7 -10 days after the first dose.

Just bought zimectrin gold paste for equines from TSC.

Please help me on dosage since there is no info for chickens and I don't want to hurt them.

I have 3 hens 1-2 years that are about 6lbs

4 pullets 6 months next week that are about 4lbs

5 pullets 10-12 weeks, I don't know weight, but they're still pretty small.

There is also a barnyard mix chick out there my son won at the fair Easter weekend, that's about 4 weeks old do I treat him?

Also I have some silkies in the brooder that are 1 week old. Obviously I don't treat them, but I'm assuming they will go outside probably in about 3 more weeks. When should they be treated?

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!!

By the way, my options at TSC were the Zimectrine, Wazine, and another brand that started with an "I", there was no Valbezan, so I figured it'd be better to treat them ASAP with what was in stock then wait for a special order.

Safeguard/Panacur (fenbendazole 10%) liquid or paste. You can find it in any feed store in the horse, cattle/goat section. It's used in sick kittens, puppies, foals, pregnant mares, reptiles all avian species and all other mammals.

I dose 50mg/kg by mouth and repeat in 10 days. Warning - Safeguard/Panacur should not be used during a molt.

Sorry to keep posting, one more question....

It says best results if feed is withheld for 24 hours. Mine free range all day, and don't really eat their grain feed often. If I took it away and left it in their pen, they would still eat grass and bugs in there. Would it be okay if I just gave it to them now? I also lost a chicken yesterday and have signs of worms, I worry about waiting another day before an initial dosing.

THANKS!

That was quick you must have a TSC in your back yard. I have not used the Zimectrin, so go back up to Dawgs post on the Zimectrin and follow his instructions. On the medium bird i would say cut the size of the pea size down. On the smaller ones in the brooder wait on them.

Okay thanks. Yes we have one right around the corner, closer than our grocery store :)
Haha unfortunately that means I go there all the time and can never just buy what I went for!
Heading out to treat them now, THANK YOU for all your help!

Hello All,

I was sent this thread in response to mine about chickens with diarhea. I have 13 hens ranging from 10 weeks to 2 years and have been keeping chickens for 6 months. No new birds have been introduced in the past 2 months, and all free range my back yard all day. My chickens have always had a more liquidy excrement (like typical bird poo you see outside), but recently a few have had diarrhea. One of my original chickens that started as a day old chick last November died yesterday. Two others from that group have coughs, and one has clear diarrhea. Also a few days ago, I noticed one of my chickens had little yellow circles in the poo as I was cleaning it (not diarrhea). It looks similar to the photo shown with eggs, but they were yellow. I didn't know anything about chicken worming, so I just figured they were seeds since they free range all day. I haven't seen anymore since.

Do you automatically de-worm all your chickens?
If they are looking off, yes.

Is there an age to do it (like should I avoid the smaller pullets?)
I have dewormed young ones, but only when they were looking off and I was sure it wasn't coccidiosis.

None of mine have molted (3 are adults hens I got at a flock swap about 3 months ago, I was told their ages vary from 1-2 years, I don't know. They have been laying since I've acquired them and haven't molted since I've had them). No new chickens have been introduced since them, and the issue is just starting now. They looked healthy upon buying them. It just felt like it was taking forever for my day old chicks I was raising to being laying, so I added them.

My soil is sand, we live in the sandhills of NC, would I then do this once a year?

Could worming them if they didn't need it kill them?
No.

Sorry I am new to all this, thank you all so much for your help!
Edited to add that I have only used Safeguard/Panacur (10% fenbendazole) on sick and young ones.
