do non-laying hens sing the "egg song" at all?

Thanks guys! I guess I'll have to be patient for a while longer with this girl...

Chickens seem to need little incentive to do the egg-call whether there is egg-laying activity occurring or not. My birds often do it while walking around outside hours after the days' eggs have been laid.

One thing I would say the song definately indicates is maturity, so it is a good indicator that your silkie is ready to start laying.

Wish mine would. At 28 weeks, they're still just lawn ornaments.

I'm selling my silkies short. They're not just ornamental, but are actually quite absorbent, and are useful for cleaning up dust, muddy patches, and those dreaded poops an the pathways.

My Buckeye, Princess, occasionally belts out an "egg song" type noise (bok-bok-baGAWK!), and she hasn't begun laying yet... I do agree with the poster who suggested that this is a sign of a maturing or mature bird though; Princess also just started doing the crouch, so I expect eggs from her in the next week or two. Has your silkie done any crouching when you approach her? that seems to be a good sign of layer-ness...

Go to youtube.com, and search for "egg song". you might have to dig a bit, as there is apparently an actual song (a kid's song, I think) called "the egg song"... but there are also several good videos demonstrating hens "singing" during/after laying.
