do not buy from gerbers

LOL how right you are...................... what self respecting welder would even consider asking a clothing sales person about welding clothes, he didn't make good choices from the git go. He was blinded by Price, gotta love CHINA now Huh !!!.

We have no idea what the OP actually said to the store personnel. I have a feeling we are just not getting the whole story here. It seems the norm nowadays to put the blame on someone else if you made a mistake. Hopefully he will not weld again without going to a store and getting proper wear suitable for welding.

I think you hit the nail on the head, Halo! That is what I am getting too, not the whole story and we are "assuming" things right now with too many good advises and suggestions for the OP. Now the OP was not written clearly for us to really understand, then we may have to close this thread because it really isn't going anywhere and it gets confusing right now what exactly did the OP said to the employee.

From what hubby did about welding clothes, he ask around his buddies, his teachers, anyone that works for welding including my brother in law. You would get different brands, different uses, different types of material and safety rank numbers on those welding outfits.

Lesson learned, I hope!

Gerber's only has the 63% poly and cotton blend coveralls. It didn't state it would be for welding. Its mainly for outdoor wear.

I believe Carhart would have some welding coveralls, pretty tough workwears.

Gerbers in canada sells Safety work wear, for construction, not welding. It is obvious that the store clerk didn't know the difference between welding attire and safety (construction attire) which is not even his/her job, her job is to sell the safety gear within the store, your job is to know what you need before you walk in the store. This Gerbers is not to be confused with the Gerbers Baby.

Welding equipment are sold at specialty stores, INDUSTRIAL STORES like the number one store across Canada, FASTENAL there are numerous others too that are well known throughout ontario, at which point I am sorry to tell you but schools across ontario teaching Welding will always advice you of where and what your supply needs are, in fact sometimes a list is provided for you. So if you missed that part in your class then you did not pay attention. Sorry to sound so harsh to the OP, but both my brothers took welding and they brought home a list from the teacher, available as a handout first day of theory class, and in the course description it tells you the equipment you must have before hand.

At the same token, looks like your teacher missed the fact your coveralls, jacket or whatever you were wearing was not of the appropriate material. Had he noticed there is no way you would been allowed to weld.

Another good place to buy your gear from is Frasers Canada.

With all that said the Store should refund your money or give you a credit.

My advice for the op on what to get is ether leather or Nomex. Leather is cheaper than Nomex but its thicker an hotter. But both are pricey. A local FD may sell you a old used turnout coat pretty cheep if they have some laying around. That's what I use to use.

It is the job of the salesman to know what is used in welding if he is working in a store that sells, um, WELDING/WORK GEAR.

My husband works in a hardware store and is required to know a lot about hardware, or else he would not be much good to his customers, now, would he? That would be like having someone working in a jewelry store who knows nothing about jewelry.

True, buyer has responsibility. But when buyer makes a reasonable request, "I need coveralls for welding class, do you have them?" and the seller directs him to an item, it actually SHOULD be the item the customer has asked for, now, shouldn't it? It sounds to me like the buyer may be a young person, asked in good faith for the item he needed, was directed by the seller to an item and LED TO BELIEVE that's what it was for. Seller's at fault.

Don't mean to interrupt but I have to mention. When I saw the title I thought it said Don't buy gerbals (the little mice looking animals) and instantly I was agreeing because of one that bit me as a child.
