Do Roosters ever learn their lesson??

I'm on my second roo. The first one (Cochin) attacked me and the kids relentlessly despite my doing everything recommended here on BYC.

My second roo (Barred Rock) leaves me alone, but he has attacked my short 4 yr. old twice now. Today, after he flew at her multiple times, I finally caught up with him and taught him a lesson! Later in the day I took my daughter back to the coop, caught up the roo, and let my daughter hold him down & yell in his face. I'm hoping this does the trick.

I can't believe that I read all the time about people having to give up nice roos because they're not allowed to have them, and all I want is a nice roo.

Third time this guy goes! Which will be a bummer because he is good with the girls and decent with me. The kids really enjoy the chickens. I can't have the roo flying up in their faces

My roo is super sweet, but a total wimp. I got him a few days ago and the poor thing gets so abused by the hens. He was already tamed when I got him, too...

How old are the kids?
They need to dominate him.. Have the kids do the flap the arm on their side and chase the roo, catch him and pin him down.. Kids need to show him who is boss...

And always have an eye on him..

Life's too short to have a mean roo around. I have a salmon faverolle man in my life right now and he wouldn't dream of lifting a feather to us

IMO, roosters and young children don't mix. No matter how docile the roo. I have a very good roo, but I don't let the 4 y.o. grandson anywhere near him.
Think about it - young children tend to run around, make alot of noise and (sometimes) try to grab a hen. In a roo's tiny brain those are all things predators do. Don't expect a roo to be able to distinquish between the two.

The first agressive roo I ever had was a Blue Cochin Roo.He was manic when my oldest daughter and grandson were present.I think that Roo got after my oldest grandson for 2 years.He never really hurt him just ran at him.This year I raised one OEGB black Roo was born on Xmas last year.He was supposed to have been the first pet Roo for new grandson which was age 16 months at time.Well the Roo grew all spring I would bring the bird up from basement and aqquaint baby with chicken.All was well till summer.Baby was walking and then going to coops with me.I dunno baby NEVER hurt that roo or anything but roo got REALLY mean to Me and baby.About took his eyes out last time.DH Sadly Put Buddy down We did try to Rehome him but...Maximus Sonny's brother has been Awesome on the other hand and his other 2 brother's.They don't bother anything at all and Maxy get's on fence every morn for his daily love rub when I go out.Some are just agressive and cannot be broke and if they cannot be home'd they can surely inflict damage to a child or even and adult.Spur's and claw's can put out an eye easily. They will likely attack small children or your small dog or cat and run away from you.I had a HUGEEEEEEE Jersey Giant roo and he was the biggest tame bird in the barnyard.

. We still working with baby over Buddy he has bird issue's and he is doing much better.The bird's hate my Croc's hehe think need get baby a pair too. Eat Rubber!

To Organics North: My little girl is a short 4 yr. old. She wouldn't be able to catch him. I caught him and let her hold him down and yell in his face. We'll see if it's had an affect on him.

To Gritstar: I don't let my kids get wild in the coop/run. They know to move slowly amongst the hens and let the hens approach them. My little girl was standing at the end of the run quietly watching the birds and there were no hens near
her so I don't know why the roo got riled up, except that he may not recognize her as a person. My macaw gets horny whenever he sees a baby crawling

Who knows what he's thinking. ...

To dieselgrl48: My first roo was also a Blue Cochin Roo. I got him because I was told how sweet Cochins are.

Anyone want a Barred Rock roo in San Diego County??

Wow! Our cochin rooster is so sweet.

Maybe let your kids scatter feed when the rooster approaches, fellow roosters don't dispense feed.

So far, neither the cochin nor the Easter Egger roo have ever gone after our daughter, but as soon as one does, he's gone.

I don't know why but all my roosters runs from me and my kids.

Roosters can do a lot of damage to a little kid. Your first responsibility and loyalty is to your children. He should have been in the crock pot hours ago.
