I had 5 RIR hens in with a RIR rooster for about 2 months collecting hatching eggs and about 3 weeks ago I sold the hens and kept the rooster to use for sexlinks later when my Doms are laying. The rooster is in the pen by himself now and every time I walk by he talks to me. My question is is he lonely or is it that my walking by stimulates him to be vocal. He sits up high in the pen where he can see the barnyard and other chickens. I let him out today.

When I lost all my hens to a predator my rooster was not only extremely lonely but he got a bit nasty! My friend gave me two chickens to keep him company until the eggs I hatched would be old enough. He's now back to his friendly self that he has enough ladies. He's a very attentive roo and he's happiest when he has a job to do.

Yes, I've found that a lone rooster will get quite lonely and even rather neurotic.
