Do side by side windows cost more than buying single windows?

I am trying to decide where to place the windows in my house plan since my architect needs an idea.

I'd planned on buying the windows from Lowes since we don't have much around here to shop from. I was thinking of just buying the single hung double pane windows and spacing them out. Some areas in the house would probably look better with the side by side windows (don't know the term for them) but I don't know how much more that would cost.

For example I want two windows on one wall in our master bedroom but they would look better placed next to each other than 7 feet apart. How much more would it cost to have them made to be placed together or can both separate windows be placed close enough to one another without having to buy something special made?

Is there a term for side by side windows? I'm not really finding much when typing that into the search engine as far as sites to buy windows from.

I don't remember the cost difference for my double window versus the singles. I think it was roughly double. You could call Lowes and ask them.

The framing, sheetrock, and trim should be cheaper for a double window versus two singles. You might not see the savings though if your estimates are based on square footage.

Thanks for the information. I didn't think about the rest being cheaper with the double. We will be doing the sheetrock ourselves so it might be easier to do the double then also.

Go to Lowes and ask for help. When we built our place ( ok.. 30 yrs ago) we had booklets from Andersen and other places that had configurations available. Good references if nothing else!

Side by side windows are called double or twin windows.

If you PM me your dimensions (width & height of window), I'll see if I can crunch some numbers for you to have an idea -- I did window & door estimating for the past 10 years until the lumberyard I worked for went out of business. I can show you the price difference between say, 2 single 3060 (that's 3 feet wide by 6 feet tall) vs. a 6060 twin unit.

You use a mull (mullion) bar in between 2 windows to make them a twin (2 mullions if you are doing a triple unit).

Andersen website has some excellent info on it & is an excellent product - we were the local distributors for many years. Silverline was bought by Andersen a couple of years ago as a lower end line, still a pretty good window. There are many options available & a company like Lowe's can order what you want - you aren't limited to just what they have in stock in their warehouse.

I will be flying out of state later this week, so it may be next week until I can get to this, but if you have a little time I'll be happy to try & help.
