Do we put bedding (like pine shaving) in the chicken run?

It's going to be like a fenced in yard area like 10x10 and it's semi grassy now. Do we have to put bedding in the chicken yard or can it stay like dirt? Also we live in Upstate NY near VT so it snows here. If we do need bedding do we put it down in the winter? Won't that be a waste if there is a lot of snow? One last thing I know this is probably a dumb question but when it snows do we shovel the snow out of their area?

You don't need to put bedding in there, but they will probably scratch the grass down pretty quick and turn it into a dirt run, which is fine. I might be near you - I too am right near VT. You should come join us on the NY Chicken Lover thread:
