Do you ever encounter people that don't know where eggs come from?

I think the biggest misconception of chickens and egg laying is that many people think you have to have a rooster for the hens to lay. I hear that one the most often.

The other day we had a friend over helping us out. He saw our OEGB Roo running around and asked "Will he lay eggs?" I said "No, HE won't lay eggs. Boys don't lay eggs." He said "Really?" I said "Really, only girls lay eggs, but don't feel bad, you wouldn't believe how many people don't know that."

I hate to admit this but , my OWN brother won't eat brown eggs. He they tasted different than white eggs....

One thing is, if you are using store bought white, vs fresh brown, they very much WILL taste different. But that's because the fresh ones taste so much better, even though he'll never admit it now! LOL

Wow this is sad. My oldest step-son who lived a sheltered life with his mom asked how we would get eggs without a rooster too. Poor kids. The boys are 16 and 17 but I've been with their dad since they were in kindergarten and pre-school. They were such picky eaters when I first met them but my mom and I fixed that really quick! LOL They LOVE fresh eggs!

Until I was 15 I thought that eggs were baby chickens and I felt quite bad about it. I was so relieved to find out they weren't baby chickens. In fact, I remember my FAMILY telling methey were definitely baby chicks but they werent alive so its okay.

Its really sad how people are so ignorant (not just about chickens!) and dont care to do any research or questioning to find out the truth. *sigh* There's a pandemic of apathy, I'll tell you that. Not that I am saying in any way that I know it all! But heck, if something comes to me that I don't know, I learn about it and appreciate the experience!

When people find out we butcher our chickens and rabbits and soon goats, they think its so cruel. Some even have asked why we dont buy meat from the store so we dont have to kill something for it
