Do you ever encounter people that don't know where eggs come from?

I don't give/sell eggs to ignorant people. If they prefer the white supermarket eggs they should stick with them. I'll save my good eggs for those that appreciate them. And the gossip at work is too funny. The ones that know buy the eggs anyway and the darn fools can do what they want! It is irratating to me for them to imply that I'm trying to poison people with my gross eggs.

When we got 2 laying hens, my 13 year old daughter said "I can't wait to see what a chicken egg looks like" and confused, I said "you don't know what a chicken egg looks like? You love eggs and we have some in the fridge right now." She said "those are chicken eggs!?" and when I asked where she thought the eggs in the fridge come from she said "the store". Of course I wanted to crack up but I was a good mom and I laughed on the inside

I just got my first egg yesterday and while this conversation did not happen with an adult it was funny/cute just the same. My 5 and 10 year old nieces came over and I told them the exciting news about the first egg. They were so excited and couldn't wait to see it. I asked them if they wanted me to cook it up and the little one says, "you can't, a chickey will be in it". I went on to ask her if a chickey comes out of the eggs she has at home and she said, "well no but those come from the store." I laughed and did my best to try to explain the whole mechanics of it. It just baffles me when I hear of adults that either do not realize where eggs come from or feel fertilized eggs are bad. Have we come so far from being self-sufficient that most of us do not comprehend basic biology?

I got my chicken coop off Freecycle. The woman had built the coop herself but gave up the chickens when she discovered her husband wouldn't eat the eggs. Apparently he didn't trust anything that doesn't come from a store

I'm a city girl and everyone - and I do mean EVERYONE - who comes over wants to see the hens and their house. I love to show them off and teach people at the same time.

Over and over again people ask me, "So, really, what do you do with the eggs? You don't seriously eat them do you?" It's unbelievable. Wish I had a dollar for each time I get asked that one. I could have a new coop. And my coop wasn't just a few bucks to build either....

But in the end of the day, it just makes me sad, so sad, that people are completely disconnected from their food and where it comes from. Being self sufficient, heck just COOKING FROM SCRATCH, is becoming a lost art. All my girlfriends think I'm the weird one because we eat our own chickens eggs, grow a vegetable garden and refuse to eat meat that comes from the grocery store. I think that we need to be exposing as many children to the benefits of living a little closer to the source -- they are our future.

Most of the people who come into my shop and notice I sell fresh eggs want to know how many eggs I get a day. I tell them each hen lays about 1 eggs a day and the common responce is- Really? Is that ALL? I thought they layed an egg every HOUR! Can you belive it, I'd only need 1 hen and I could share her with the neighbors.

Next time someone asks you that, have them tell you why they think you would not eat the eggs. Why do they think store eggs are better? Then post the answer. I'll be watching. I would really like to know.

Depressing...never tasting a real egg because it "came out of a chicken's bottom" all these stories make me want to smack those....city slickers...on the head! I know it wouldn't help but the temptation....

THWACK!!!

I never have to try to push eggs on anyone at work. One of my friends recently changed departments, and when I went over to drop off some spare produce, we started talking about chickens. He plans to get his first this spring.

Before I knew it, I'd attracted a crowd of about 10 people, all wanting to know if I could "put them down for a dozen a week", or asking if I'd bring them some basil like the stuff I'd just dropped off ... all offering to pay me and pay me well.

So far, I've just been giving excess away, I get such a wide variety of stuff back in return ... recently Cherries in Cachaça from the wife of one fellow ...

We don't have a lot of chickens at present, and I was planning to add some more this spring again ... given the attention I've been getting at work, and all the requests, I may need to expand quite a bit.

I know, any excuse ... any excuse at all ...

There's at times the usual univited comment from someone passing by about "chickens are smelly" or "how could you EAT eggs that come from ewwww" but that's really a very small minority.
