Do you ever feel like calling it a day? *Just caught a dog*

We have 7 chicks outside. The day of the attack, an Americauna and an OEG had managed to escape to under the shed. The next day, I found a black Silkie and a rooster Japanese bantam that had crammed themselves under stored fencing. I had 4 in the house, moved 3 of them outside and bought another 20 chicks. I have 18 coming in just over 2 weeks from Meyer. I'll be up 3 on what I had before the attack.

The dogs keep coming back. Partner has been working very hard this weekend getting as much of the fence done as he can.

This was the first time I had gotten attached to chickens. I'd even named a couple, which was unheard of with me. We had a light Brahma who was HUGE, never seen such a big chick in my life. Had a crooked toe and we called it Goose. I've ordered two light Brahma's from Meyer in the replacements, it was such a sweet chicken.

I still wake up in the night to look out and check if all seems well.

I do, today all of the sudden. I have had chickens for 1 year and have had to cull 2 chicks at 2 days old , 2 hens at 9 months old and now I got flogged by my rooster yesterday out of the blue. He is normally very well behaved. So now I really need to cull him. I have 3 chicks out of six from TSC that I think are roos. It seems like everytime I turn around I need to kill something, and I really don't want to. I think I am done.

Thank you all for your kind words and encouragement. We all learn from our mistakes and hope NOT to make the same mistakes again!

I got 6 bantams from TSC; one had spraddle leg and died, two more died shortly after getting them home. Of the three we had left, one has crossed beak (and he's a rooster), one is a cute lavender cochin and the last is a rooster. I know how you feel.

I've read before about people being flogged by roosters, what does it mean? We'e only ever had one adult rooster, and he wasn't around for long before he died protecting his ladies from dogs (same neighbour).

Beautiful ladies, Fentressfarmer!

These are our 4 survivors, Japanese Bantam, Black Silkie, EE and an OEG in the back.

This is our coop and run, and the ill fated addition. Can see the damage on the shed from the dogs, too. Will have to replace that siding before we convert the shed into a coop.

It might make a difference. My neighbor's cat was killing the song birds in our yard. We would feed the birds and the cat would stalk them under the feeder and kill them. I found a dead bird daily under the feeder when the cat was creeping around. Needless to say, I was worried about my 3 month old chickens. I spoke to my neighbor and the best she could offer was to place a bell on the cat's neck. (She really did not want to take responsibility, it is everyone else's problem). Finally, when I could take no more, I picked up one of the dead song birds and placed it in a zip lock bag, with a note, and left it on her gate entrance. I just wanted to show her proof; that I wasn't making this up. I have not seen her cat since....
I would rather work with folks then to threaten. But, when all else fails, its lock and load.

Love the silkie, the pen looks pretty good to me!
