Do you ever feel like calling it a day? *Just caught a dog*

I looked out of the house to see the chicks in the coop in a complete flap, and this little dog jumping against the hardware cloth. It couldn't get to them, but didn't stop my poor chickies practically having a heart attack.

Now it's yowling up a storm outside while I wait for my husband to get home. Sure the whole neighbourhood can hear it, so I really hope whoever it's owner is doesn't come by.

Sick of roaming dogs.

No tags? Take it to the pound. Or SSS. Or return it to the owners with a bill for your lost birds.

Looks like a long haired dachshund, you could always put an add up on Craigs list and try to recover some of your lost chicken money....

Well... That might not be allowed, but I bet she/he would have a shot at finding a new home if you took him/her to a shelter. It's kinda cute for a chicken murdering little monster. If the shelter decideds to put it down, your hands are clean and you're free of a guilty conscience :)

I would understand sss after all you guys have been through though.

I'm glad you caught the little fart but at least. It didn't get any of them! If you find the owner I hope you give them an earful!!!

Yeh, I am feeling the same way now, but I won't give up.

I just had my show quality breeding stock of Japanese Bantams halved from 2 dog attacks in the same day. I can't keep this dog out of the garden - it gets over a 5 foot concrete wall, climbs a 6 foot chain link fence into the run and BAM.

Everything has been great for over a year now.

I went through a bad time before that with my birds constantly getting sick and I was going to give up.

they had one thing after another in the following order:

Fowl Pox,
Scaly leg,
Infections Bronchitis,
Fungus infections of combs,
Dog attack
Roosters fighting,
chicks and nests died in a flash flood (the only one we had in 10 years of living here)
More fowl pox

After all that I was so down and tired of treating each chicken for whatever disease or accident if had.

But I kept going. and after a few months everything was perfect. I made some good money of selling chicks and young adults, I had lots of eggs, and my birds were very healthy, beautiful and tame.

Now over 1 year later I get this dog........but I am not going to let it win!!!!!!

Jak - Have you considered running an electric fence to keep the dog out?
No. That is a good idea. But my place is kind of 'natural' and there are lots of plants, trees, creepers, etc all over the wall that might short it.

I am going to try to catch the dog, but if that fails then I will try the fencing.

Thanks

There are enough wild predators for chicken keepers to deal with, without attacks from neighbour's dogs who cannot or will not keep their animals under control. This must be a breach of a local law surely? I would go with the advice to contact animal control and say in view of the repeated attacks on your chickens, you are afraid for the safety of your children. That neighbour will not find it so amusing when she/he gets a visit from the authorities! I am sorry for your losses.

I am so sorry for the loss of your chicks. I am trying to imagine the how you are feeling and as I sit here by 2 bantam chicks are in my lap and the others chicks (RIR and Fayoumis) are exercising in the bathroom. I am hoping to move the older "girls" outside as soon as this weather straightens itself out.

It got dropped off at a far away Animal Control. Sad thing is, he was such a sweet dog. I aimed a kick at him when he was jumping against the fence at the chicks and he flopped right on his back with paws in the air. No idea who the owner was, it wasn't the neighbour across the street. One less to worry about though!
