yep, should have been a Pirate too..either that or in my late teens -20's during the late 60's ..I'd have been an outlaw biker for sure....todays OL's just arent the same
This thread is kind of funny because I have often felt that I was the only one who feels that way.....that I should have been a pioneer! I agree with y'all about teaching a new generation. The younger girls I worked with, when hearing about my latest projects each week, would look at me and say, "You're a hippy, aren't you?"
I don't know when making your own bread, soap, garden, etc. translated into being a hippy but, if that is a hippy, then I guess I ARE one!!!
My DH is always telling people that I make my bread, our soap shampoo, medicine (for the most part), grow our veggies, make our quilts and so forth. The people he speaks to look at him like "Why does she do it? Do you not let her go shopping?"
He just shales his head...he gave up explaining long ago.
People have been telling me since I was a little girl that I was born in the wrong time. My best friend in high school said in a previous life I was probably
a mule skinner, or Annie Oakley and brought a piece of the past back with me. My mother "The Queen" never understood why I would rather do it the old fashioned way instead of use all the new stuff. She grew up chopping cotton, with 12 brothers and sisters and embraced all the new modern miracles.
I taught my children how to shoot, hunt, fish, and live off the land. They don't do it now, but at least I know they can. My DD at 28 is starting to show some signs of getting back to nature and she is taking an interest in my chickens. My son on the other hand says, "I can if I have to - but right now I don't have to". Maybe he will come around.

Honey, I was around in the 60s and--trust me--hippies were dirty, lazy, and looking for a free ride! Never met a single one who would actually WORK for ANYTHING! Naw, we are "back-to-the-landers" and that's a whole 'nuther critter entirely!
