Do You "Exp Date" Label The Carton, On Your For Sale Eggs?

Here's another Julian date table. In the Air Force many years ago we used "raday" (for "radio day") to refer to these dates.

I don't date my eggs. I use recycled cartons from the neighbor next door, and most of my eggs go to her. I'm only selling six-packs at a time and they're so fresh (like, I've sent the boys out the door with warm eggs) I don't anticipate problems.

On the other hand I've thought about buying some of the clear plastic six packs and labeling them with my address, and trying to set up an "egg subscription" thing where people bring the carton back with payment for a refill. That would cut back on the number of 12-pack cartons building up in my cupboards. Anybody have ideas for what to do with them?

i've thought of having my dh make some nice labels on the pc since i use misprinted cartons and i try to get recycled ones from family and friends. but i still mark on the side when i started and ended collecting them. i think i'll start using the Julian dates too.

with the labels, you can always mark the date you packed them on yourself. at least using the misprinted cartons they already have all the required FDA stuff so you have your behind covered for the rest of the labeling requirements.

i number my egg cartons as i fill them. that way i know which ones are the oldest. example. i start with first dozen i put a 1 on the carton fill that up. next dozen will be a 2. and so on. and i always sell the lowest numbers first. oldest to newest.

Thanks for the input folks.

I think for most people around here the "Best By" date would probably work best.

Right now, as our hens are just starting to lay, we are only selling to friends and co-workers who are already educated on the joys of "Farm Fresh", but in the future it would be nice to be able to do more.

And when that happens it's good to be armed with answers.
