Do you feed BOSS in the summer?

Around here (Central Maine) BOSS sells for between 17.95 to 19.95 for 40-50 pound bags. I wish it was cheap up here! I feed it to my chickens, horses and goats.

Can you feed them the regular striped seeds? I have a few sunflower heads just about ready, and we planned on giving them the whole head to pick at.

You may find that some of the cheaper priced BOSS is either lower in protein and or contain less oil in them..
The BOSS that I have been using is around 16-17 percent protein (average) and is a little oily to the touch..
If your BOSS is dry then the chances are good that they don't have as much oil in them and could be old...

We buy it at the seed and grain for $17.99/50 lb bag. I buy Purina scratch (that's what they like, they didn't care for the Blue Seal stuff at all, which is a bit cheaper), BOSS, safflower and white millet and mix them together. Spoiled little feathered monsters!

Safflower has a higher protein content, that's why I added it.

The statistics I read put safflower at 21%. If I find the reference I'll post it.

ETA Actually, I'm low. 24%. See here.
