Do you feed corn?

wink.png
Hey, some solutions for feeding corn;; At present I feed some corn to the animals, chicks and hogs. Amazing that the hogs know the difference between GMO and open pollinated corn. This coming season I will plant about 1/2 acre of open pollinated corn, organic, no but without any alteration by genetic process. If there are any questions feel free to PM me. The BIG corporations are trying to put a stop to the open pollinated growing/

corn doesn't offer nearly as much usable protein as it seems and there are plenty of things that offer as much (or more) protein as soy, as well as the good essential fatty acids. i would suggest peas, flax, sunflower seeds, fish... lots of options. the benefit of corn, really, is it's high fat and carb content for the ridiculously cheap prices.

i don't know of any feeds that exclude corn, but there are several that don't have soy. Countryside Naturals is the one i use. it's organic, so the corn isn't GMO and it's not the main ingredient.

wow, that table looks terrible, but i can't figure out how to fix it since it looks perfect in edit...

Geez, and here I've been wasting my $$$ on using rat poison. All I would have needed is some GMO corn. LOL!

Yes, the idea seems crazy.. You know how it is some just like to question "authority"...(cooperations or government).. Thats all people are doing..as far as I can see.
All this modern feed stuff is quite new. Think about it, people in their 80's were not raised on the same diet children are raised on today. Heck it was not until after WWII that our country started to produce "convenience food" We have not even been through one generation that was given corn and soy in concentrated forms from they day they are born until the day they die.

Once we started reading the ingredients on most foods in a package.. We realized how much corn and soy is in the American diet. Personally I like moderation. If I want to eat soy I will go to a Japanese Sushi place and get some Edamame soybeans. If I want corn I will go get a package of sweet corn out of the freezer. (Almost taste as good as the day we picked it.. ah warm august day..)

When eating cheese ravioli, I don't want to be eating soy!
Tell you the trueth,,, I am starting to feel like the Rat, being force fed corn and soy!!

I just want control over the amount of corn and soy we eat.. Thats not too much to ask for.. So I am interested in low corn and soy diets for MY chickens.

Respectfully,
ON

What about the amino acid profile of all the ingredients you posted.

Corn is NOT a protein source, don't know why we get worked up by stating it has a poor protein content when it is a known fact.

Feeds need to have a combination of energy and amino acids to meet the animals needs. The blend of amino acids is the important issue regardless of the blend of ingredients you choose to use.

See, and that is a concern of mine, too, Jim. What the heck can I feed my chickens .... WITHOUT soy and corn but with the vitamins and important trace minerals and such? Is there an answer to this? Anyone?????

Personally I don't understand the panic about corn. It is a carbohydrate source similar to wheat but with different levels of CP and CHOs.

I can see where people can transpose the long term (i.e. decades long) effects of soy from humans to livestock, but I don't see the link myself.

Kathyinmo--I doubt you will find a feed that does not contain Corn or Soy. Aren't you primarily concerned about GMO's?--if so, organic feeds are the way to go. You could mix your own feed, but it is a difficult undertaking to do properly, and expensive. There is nothing magic about corn or soy, they are simply cheap, and could be easily substituted with other grains and fish meals.

well, the question was about protein, so that's the answer i gave. if you will read my posts, you'll see i'm not saying people shouldn't feed corn- in moderation. and, of course, i'm against GMO corn for several reason, so i only feed organic. that's my personal choice, and it works for me.

where i see the problem is in feeds that are MOSTLY corn. you can't tell me that corn is a complete food source OR that it is highly superior to other options. what i don't understand is why people have such a hard time opting out of corn in their feed. not because i think corn is big and evil, but because it should be like every other feed ingredient and be down to the choice of the consumer, not the pushers at Big Ag.
