I love it when someone gets a door for me. I always look them in the eye and say thank you and have a great evening or nice day or whatever is appropriate.
It has nothing to do with whether or not I'm capable of opening the door. I can throw a 50 lb sack of feed on my shoulder and jog to my car in 3" heels. My capabilities are not the issue. It does not diminish my abilities, and I don't see where the flawed principle is.
I think it is a show of respect and good manners, which is why I always thank the person holding the door, and I make sure I hold the door for anyone I can, it's the polite thing to do.
I guess I don't see why women are automatically worthy of more respect then men simply because we don't have certain equipment. I open doors for men and women because it is polite and I have respect for them as individuals. If someone opened a door for me, I think that it is because they are being polite, not because I am female. Women open the door for me also.
You know how some stores have a double set of doors? You walk through one set of doors and then cross a little entry way and then there is another set of doors. When ever someone opened the first set of doors for me, I would run ahead and open the next set of door for the guy. Several men got very annoyed with me for doing this. I was actually told not to do this.
Just as women should be gracious and understand the respect behind the gesture of opening doors, men should show the same polite manners if a woman opens the door for them.
