Do you have a dog that's good with chickens? Please share!

I had a chihuahua (she was run over in front of our house last week) that used to like to be in with the chickens....until either they got to big and scared her...or she changed after not being in the pen with them for about two weeks. I really miss her.

My coonhound is great with the chickens.
He was very depressed when My chickens had to leave for a couple weeks.

I have 3 dogs 1 rott mix who could care less about the chickens...
and 2 LGD dogs who are there to gaurd the chickens....

All 4 of my dogs are great with chickens. I have an English setter, a beagle/basset mix, a Cairn terrier and a Rat terrier. The setter, Cairn and the Rat terrier are more interested in ridding the coop of mice. Great mousers. The beagle mix is too busy chasing squirrels. Here's some pictures.

I've got a German Shepherd mix that is totally safe with my chickens .... now. When I first got chickens a few years ago he ate one. He and I had a serious talk. Because I am alpha here he got the message and has never touched one since. He lays with them and walks through them and I have no worries at all about him hurting one anymore.

I also have a Pomeranian who thinks she's everybody's momma. She tried to momma the chicks, momma the kittens, momma the other dog. Silly girl.

He's not much protection, but my Lhasa Apso, Leo, is good with the chickens. He especially likes to stare at the bator. I think he knows eggs will hatch into chickies. He walks among the chickens in the yard and ignores them. The best dogs to have around chickens are ones that totally ignore them. Lhasa Apsos were actually bred to be little guard dogs. Guarding type dogs are often better with poultry because the "hunting and wandering" part of their prey drive has been downsized with selective breeding.

As soon as they weren't intensely interested (and darn near drooling over the chicks) - you know, as if the newness wore off- I began to pull the chicks out of the box and let the dogs sniff. - Again, newness and intensity... but I stopped that excitement with saying "Hey! Not for you". When the dogs were ok and could care less that there were chicks walking around on our floor, I made the dogs lay on their sides, making them very vulnerable, but having to trust me... and I put the chicks on the dogs- letting them walk all over them... by doing this, I figured I was driving the point home that they had to respect that the chickens were part of the household because I said so.
Now the dogs ignore the chickens! The two dogs and the two chickens take sun baths together! My Border Collie actually avoids them because the Barred Rock pecked her eye, and the Labrador (my mouse hunter) avoids being too close because she doesn't like giving piggy back rides!

Lets see, I've got 2 Danes and one pitbull mix, and he's just a push over, although, when he was just a puppy, we "taught" him to be kind to the girls. My dogs are real good with my girls, they know they are family, and don't bother them. My cats are wonderful with them as well. Some even like to lay outside with them too.

I have 3 pugs that don't bother the chickens at all. They go and lay with the chickens as they sun bathe.If the chickens get too close, they might try to play with them, but never hurt. My Lab/Samoyed mix also leaves them alone, like they are not even there. Now my dachshund has killed about 15. All teh dogs protect the yard. So no animal that does not live here is allowed in the yard.
