Our started off in the living room near the pellet stove. They are now on the enclosed porch to get used to day/night temp differences.

I am also wanting to put my chicks in the guest bedroom! It gets on my nerves how people without any chikens knowledge think they know so much!

Your BIL sounds like a pain in the you-know-what.

I have had chicks indoors, in my basement. They were dusty & smelly and my whole family had allergy flair-ups. I won't do it again.
Avain flu is not a verified threat. Histoplasmosis is. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/histoplasmosis/DS00517 My step-dad had it. He said it was a lengthy & uncomfortable recovery.

If my sister had chicks in her basement or in a closed room, I'd have no fear sending my kids to stay for a day or two. They are teens and really healthy. I am gonna be honest with you: I would not send younger kids (under 7 yrs.) to spend the night in a home with chickens in the kitchen, livingroom or diningroom. I just wouldn't. You'd have to be a housekeeping ninja to keep it clean. I am not saying this to be mean. Please understand that people need to follow their own conscious when it comes to their children.

We almost always have babies in the house. If anything- I think it builds up your immune system.

my sister said that she is letting them come anyway... Which is fine as long as it won't cause any problems between them or us! I told her we respect his parental authority and understand, we homeschool so we get a lot of people that think we are crazy just on that aspect and never would want to step on anyone's toes when it comes to being a parent (we get ours stepped on a LOT by my MIL) ... I just hope and pray they don't get sick for some reason!! last time they where here they came sick and got worse with whatever they had so I just don't want there to be an "I told you so" around the corner if they get sick for ANY reason!

I had my year old chicks in a downstairs bedroom but this year i couldnt put babies down there so they lived in the living room for 8 weeks. I vaccuumed up the dust multiple times a day and changed out the poo 2 times a day so there wasnt really a smell or dust problem.
