Do You Have To Pay Sales Tax on Your Chicken Feed?

That's too bad. Every state is different.

I just dropped off my Form ST3 for Agriculture Production exemption this afternoon at the Fleet store. The only thing I had to certify was that I am selling some of my eggs, which I do. So, I signed the form without hesitation. I should be back into the tax exempt status in about a week. If not, I'll just buy my feed at one of the other stores where I still get tax exempt status.

FWIW, I may be eligible for tax exempt status on some other farm type supplies. Evidently, if I am accepted for Agriculture Production exemption, it applies to other purchases as well. But I have to ask when I checkout and they verify I'm in the system, then the computer will automatically take off the tax for any and all items that I qualify for tax-free.

:idunno So, maybe I'm going to come out ahead after all of this. I hope so.

:clapWhen I brought in my completed Form ST3, the manager and workers on shift today could not have been more helpful. They were very encouraging to get people back on the tax-exempt status. Our state encourages people to use that tax-free status because they want people to use it. The manager and employees I talked to today were very supportive. What a difference from my previous interaction with the other manager!
I am so glad that worked out for you!

Here in NC, I havent recently checked on tax exempt status. It used to be, you needed to fill out paperwork. Similar to your form but last I did it, it was 3 pages.

Then you hit the portion you had to enter your tax farm ID #. Ive never been set up for that (didnt qualify the 2 or 3 times i did fill it out) & never had the number, so have paid feed tax on all livestock & pet foods. Cat, chicken, dog, duck, equine & rabbit... since 1993 - when we came back from GE.

Edit - Over those years we have purchased TONS of feed, hay (only in a pinch from farm store as usually bought directly from field or had delivered by producer), various parts for equipment and equipment (never have had a tractor) but fencing & tools for installing, parts for water tanks etc. Equipment to care for &/or train ponies & horses.

I just bought another 3 bags of tax-free chicken feed this past weekend. It all adds up over time.

Also, I have found that some other items are also included in that tax-free farm status. Nobody seems to know all the items that are included in the tax-free category. There is no list at the store. But when you buy some items, you just mention your tax-free account at the checkout and all eligible products are automatically taken care of by the computer. Again, I don't know which items are tax-free, or not, and nobody at the store knows either. It's all hidden in their computer system, and you just have to take it on faith it is correct, I guess.
