Do you HAVE to put posts of an elevated coop in concrete???

Our ground is good - heavy coop/cabin set on large, flat rocks with chunks of post on top measured to put coop on level.

Picture's worth a thousand words - thank you! I'm fairly certain we're going to rest it on something like bricks or pavers or cinder blocks. We don't want to have concrete permanently in the lawn, and it sounds like we don't have to! And it sounds like the advice on here is to use tin snips for the hardware cloth? Wish there was a less tedious way . . .

If you're going to put it on blocks instead of posts, I would really suggest adding some anchoring system of some sort, so that the coop does not suddenly "leave" in a storm wind.

You *can* cut hardwarecloth or other wire mesh with a circular saw with a metal-cutting blade on it. I saw it done once. I would very much NOT recommend it. At the very least, do it indoors where the shrapnel can be gathered back together afterwards instead of lying around to get eaten and kill animals, and wear protective clothing, and clamp the mesh down well before cutting. Snips is really a much better idea...

(e.t.a. - if you use the big sheet-metal snips I described, they are like scissors on steroids, probably 12"+ long and very heavy duty, it is not tedious at all. It is really quite fast. The snips are just annoying to operate unless you have very large and strong hands.)

Good luck, have fun,

Pat
