Do You Heat Your Coop? (Poll) LATEST UPDATE PG 15

I keep seeing this mentioned, and I'm wondering if this doesn't vary a lot by region? I'm in Minnesota, and we occasionally lose power in the summer from downed power lines. But I cannot ever remember it happening even once in the winter, in my (almost) 42 years.

75 watt bulb overhead and a 60 watt in cinderblocks to keep water less frozen. I treat them to a heater on brutal mornings-then it goes right back into our upstair bathroom for people.

No, but my chickens are in the coop in the garage so although it gets cold, they are out of the elements. DBF doesn't heat his either, but every now and then he'll turn on the torpedo heater for them for a few minutes so they can thaw. Does that count?

Edited because I made a TYPO!!!

No heat in the coop except the heated waterer.

Power does go out pretty regularly here in Maine and also back in the Adirondacks where I'm from. In fact, even before tonight's storm began, the Governor declared a state of emergency since up to an inch of ice is predicted. When the power goes out as is likely, I'm set with about two days worth of kerosene for the portable heater in the house but after that, I'm screwed.

My hens will be fine out in the coop, though. They got all the feathers and are used to single digit temps at night already. I'm not, though.

(As the Bible says about chickens, "many are cold but few are frozen.")

We lose power often enough here to worry about it. It usually happens on day 19 of a hatch, or on the #(*$@& coldest windiest night of the year. Last year I was running around trying to set up a generator that I had no idea how to operate in 50mph winds at -20°F... not fun. I'd just as soon not have to do that.

I think there must be a very wide variance by region-those a little more south of me seem to have enough storms in the winter to decide not to use a heater (along with the warmer temps, sorry Tori!

) but it would be such a rarity to have the power go out here in the winter, so with the extreme cold temperatures here, I definitely use a heater, and there isn't anyone who could possibly talk me out of using a heater!

I guess those who think that everyone has to live with power outages, can't even imagine it never going out-I think they're just jealous!!!

Don't you?!!! If we could share it-we would!!!

Poor, poor chicken lovers!!!

Seriously, though, I am very thankful that we really don't have to worry about power outages!!
