So far we have a very impressive 31% BYCers who heat the coop in this very informal and voluntary poll.

I have not broken the numbers down geographically because I think that it theoretically gets cold enough everywhere at least for short periods, which would precipitate heating regardless of whether the duration was a week (in southern US) or 5 months (in Alaska).

Plus, I have hardly collected enough data for a truly scientific poll. But, the numbers so far are eye opening for me.

Please keep the responses coming!

I live in So Cal, but it got down in the low 40's last night. I have some young birds, about three months old, out in the chain link coop, no shelter of any kind except the roof. They had a small "introducing" cage, and an upended "Bunny Luv" carrot box with a door cut in it and bermuda on the floor they could go in with, but when they predicted wind I moved them down into the "den box" that a wolf used to sleep in, 360 degrees enclosed with just a door three feet tal land two feet wide. I moved their snuggle box down there with them, along with their feed and water. This morning they were not using their snuggle box and appeared anxious to come out and play, even with a stiff breeze still blowing.

Some areas of Alaska do not get cold for 5 months. I grew up in the banana belt of Alaska (Ketchikan). Never broke 0, and some years no snow and rarely broke freezing. But did it rain there. Nearly 200 inches a year. We recognised greenhorns "chechakos" by the umbrellas. 30 years later I have just learned to not laugh at umbrellas. I live in Seattle area now, and call the climate here as dry as the sahara. Although I'll say that I'm colder here in Seattle, than I was for the year I lived in Anchorage.
I heat and light the coop cause I want the chickens to have a better life than me.
