Do You Heat Your Coop? (Poll) LATEST UPDATE PG 15

Yes and going to start making changes to the breeds I keep, no high combs and no hanging wattles, they started getting frostbit!!!

In your tally, I don't think you're collecting enough info, weather temps and averages should be collected, too, for more helpful results;)

Don't you know posting 'A simple yes or no will do' automatically gets you everyone's life story!?

No. There are 30 something birds in that barn, they're their own heat.

I have a 100 w bulb over my waterer. I dont know if it's enough to keep their water from freezing but I should find out tonight.
other than that I dont have any heat on out there.

The Tally so far with some interpretation:

Water heaters are not counted as coop heaters. Neither are brooders, in which I consider heat to be essential.

So far: 55 NO
24 YES

So, we're running about 2:1 against.

I kinda figured that would happen. Not that I mind, I kinda like knowing what many of BYC members do in the winter....

Yes because I have only a few birds of breeds that aren't cold hardy and prone to frostbite in a large coop with no insulation. While in a climate that gets to -20F in the middle of winter. They don't produce enough heat to bring the temp up even 1 degree from outdoors. Right now I just have one 250w heat lamp running. When it gets really cold I have a utility heater setup in a mesh enclosure.

Not everyone has a location listed such as Akane above.

Doesn't it get cold everywhere in the US? I'm assuming that even most of the south gets some stretches of cold weather in the winter.

No, no heat. Not here in Louisiana, baby.

Now y'all forget about that 6' of heavy wet snow we got last winter, the girls loved it. Since they weren't the least bit chilly out playin in it, I shore didn't think they'd get frostbite snugglin together on the roost in their comfy coop.
