Do You Heat Your Coop? (Poll) LATEST UPDATE PG 15

Yea, sometimes. Other times it stays in the teens, it can go much lower, we've had stretches where it hovers at zero or below. Seriously. I understand that isn't near as cold as you, but it's cold enough for me. You can't use Boston for statistics throughout Massachusetts, my temps down here can be 20 to 30 degrees below - or above - Boston, which is on the coast and influenced by the water temperatures. Believe me, February around here is much lower than 30. The interior of Mass is even colder, they're in the snow belt, their temps regularly are 10-20 degrees lower than mine down here.

I understand it gets much colder there, but I also know there are other people up in Alaska who are keeping their chickens with no heat at all - it's all good for wherever you are. I'll take Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain's opinion and leave it at that.

Mrs. AK Bird Brain happens to live in an area that doesn't come even close to the severe temperatures we have. Like I have said, you have to do what you need to do for your area-I would not heat my coop if I lived in a warmer climate like you do!!!!!! Don't be offended because I have chosen to do what I need to do for the area I live in!

Please let's not argue.

If I was in Luv's shoes, I'd be heating, too.

I live in wisconsin. today the 8 am temp was minus 6 degrees F..

Normally I do not heat. but I just happen to have a dozen late arrivals who need the brooder heat, so I put them and the brooder hood into the chicken coop to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak.. the best result of this is that the water does not freeze..

I see no harm in making the chickens more comfortable, no matter where you live..

Heck- If I lived were Luv does I would be installing a furance.
Everybody needs to make a decision based on their circumstances.
I think we can all agree that we take good care of our chickens wether we heat or not.

I am not offended in the least, and can't imagine why you seem to be so. The point is the vast, and I do mean vast, majority of us don't live in an area where you need to heat a coop. You people who live at the top of the world do need to - no one is telling you otherwise. I mistook a state acronym for Alaska as Arkansas, not a difficult mistake to make. I'm very happy you manage to keep them up there, heated coop and all - but that need for heat doesn't apply to the rest of the country.

I live in Minnesota where it can get to -50f, I've seen it more than once. I have a wood stove in the coop that we used in the house until two years ago when we switched to a pellet stove. I only heat when it gets in single digits or lower. I suppose I wouldn't have to as I built a new insulated coop this year but I do anyway. I do not have electricity in the coop and never will, the coop is off the grid.
