Do You Heat Your Coop? (Poll) LATEST UPDATE PG 15

Yes, with a 75w halogen bulb that makes me very nervous. And the colder it gets, the less effective it is.

Going to use that aquarium heater idea for the water - thanks!!

I'll pop in here since it's a poll:

No

I will say that if I lived further north and had a smaller, less well insulated and/or lower-thermal-mass coop, I expect I'd make sure I had a bulb handy in case it ever seemed temporarily necessary.

I live in Maryland and I do not heat.

I have insulated the inside and use 2, 6 gal water jugs filled with boiling water placed around the inside of the coop and it really works well. Nice and toasty.

yes - use a red heat lamp . i will probably insulate the ceiling/walls of the coop next spring, so may not need it next winter.

Hi Chickenpiedpiper,
Did you lose your power this past weeK?How did your bird make out?It shouldn't have been to bad the temps weren't to low. Were practicly neighbors,I'm in Seabrook,N.H.

No, I don't have any heating.

However, this is my first winter with chickens, so we'll see how they do. From this thread, it sounds like they'll be fine.

No, i don't have any heat in the coop. My flock can either bury themselves in the deep litter or huddle together on their perch. I'm in Alabama and my girls insist on going out in the cold December rain, so I have to assume they tolerate cold quite well. I have buff Plymouth Rocks.

Animals are hardier than we tend to give them credit for. Even my horses prefer being out in the pasture during a cold rain over being in their nice, dry stalls. Go figure!
