Do you put eggs in cartons for lockdown or let them roll freely????

I just cleaned the bator out from my first hatch and it was easy. I used the egg cartons with the center ridges and part of the bottoms cut out and I put shelf liner from our camper down over the wire. There was no sticky messy stuff on anything but the carton and liner and no problems with spraddle leg. I just dumped out a few bits and pieces of shell, gave it a quick soap/water rinse and lightly sprayed with clorox clean-up to disinfect it. Rouen duck eggs go in tomorrow.

The shelf liner rocks!

I had 22/24 hatch with two quitters at around day 12-15.

Thanks EweSheep and peachlover for the great hatch pictures! They sure make me excited.

I'm definitely going to try out the egg cartons, and I already have shelf liner implemented.

has anyone used the plastic incubation egg trays to hatch them in during lockdown? If they are good enough to set the eggs in during the first 18 days then why not let them hatch in them as well. Just wondering. Thanks Bill

Don't use any paper that the chicks can slip on or they may get spraddle leg. The shelf paper, especially the kind you put in RVs so things don't slide around on the shelves, works great. It has little holes in it for ventilation.

Yes. Don't use regular shelf liner (the slippery paper kind.) You want the rubbery stuff (can get it at walmart etc) that has holes in it and is good for traction!

Thanks, I'll have to go shopping. The shelf liner I have is vinyl(?) with ridges but doesn't have ventilation holes so I may as well keep a roll for bator purposes.

hey Bill, I was wondering the same thing? Do their legs get stuck in the cracks between the racks?
