Do you REALLY let them in your home??

I will admit to it...we have one hen that likes to come inside to lay her egg. She jumps up on the sofa and settles in with her head in a corner. After the egg is layed, she jumps down off the sofa, sings the egg song, and wants to wander through the house. I usually cut short the wandering and escort her to the back door and back into the chicken pen. She does occasionally poop on the floor but not often and since I have hardwood floors - a baby wipe takes care of that mess. My sons love it since she usually comes in to lay at about 3:00 when both of them are home from school and enjoying cartoons. She lays the egg on the couch while they are sitting there. So yes, I am guilty of letting the hen in the house.

One of my hens who I think grew up as a pet more than a farmyard chicken, she's very pretty, got loose apparently and came in here to visit. Pretty funny. Hear this chirp and there she is on the back of my chair.

I have plenty of house chickens right now

One pair of serama Tyson and Clare who live in the livingroom (Tysons sitting with me right now on the edge of my desk sleeping). One pair of LF white Leghorns Kernal and Krispy who live downstairs (2 of the 3 of my first birds and usually come up and sit on my lap like big hams). And at the moment my momma bantam black wyandotte BB with her 10 serama chicks around 4 weeks old 6 boys and 4 girls.

Add that all together and thats 15 house chickens.

There are some accidents that happen but it's very rare.

Where do they poo? Do they go out like a dog and then come back in or do they have a "potty area" just for them? I know my boys would love to have the chickens come in for visits.

I raised my youngest batch of girls in the bathroom. Thought they'd stay in the tub for a while until I could sort out their coop (snort). They were roosting on the shower curtain rod before long and sleeping in the sink. When they were old enough to go out I led them outside, and then, in again at night. Quite a parade. Now they follow me anywhere. My oldest gal, Whiskers, never misses an opportunity to wander in if the door is open. She's a social critter and loves company (and catfood). There's an occasional splat on the floor but with wood and tile floors it's easy to clean up. Into every life a little poo must fall !

Fred's Hens :

My chickens and I have this contract. The won't be in my house, and I won't sleep in their coop.
My wife witnessed and co-signed. In fact, she authored it.

This is Frack, the queen of all she surveys! She recuperated in the kitchen after her sides got pretty ripped up by a roo. She would lay beside me while I was on the computer. Whenever she got up, I would take her outside. She would do her thing and then come running back to the front door because she was really afraid of that roo, and so I would let her back in. Over time, it got to where she would go to the front door and start cackling to be let out. At one time she even went broody and hatched babies in my kitchen! She hasn't had an accident on the floor probably in about six months or so. She isn't in all the time, she comes and goes as she pleases and is in only a few hours every day.

She goes up the stairs to lay her egg in our bed, but won't come down by herself. Since I work at home, I'm pretty much at her beck and call!

homesteadinmama- Most of the time their in their "coop" which for the seramas a xlarge dog crate and for the leghorns a xx large wire dog crate. The momma and the babies and in a sort of small wire dog crate. But all of these are let out during the day except for when TYson wants to sit on my arm as I type

my 2 baby girls are 4 weeks old now. I stopped making them stay in the brooder 2 weeks ago when they refused to live in it. They are in my bathroom and wander as they please. I have the floor covered in builders paper (heavy brown paper) and I vacuum up with a hose periodically. I wouldn't care at all if the floor was solid hard flooring but it's a weird carpet material. yes, it's getting replaced with tiles in a few weeks. I am starting to feel apprehension about putting them out!
