Do you REALLY let them in your home??

I've been around chickens my entire life.

But if I ever saw chickens roaming in someone's house or a chickens wearing diapers, I'd get that queasy feeling in my stomach.

I must live in "the land time forgot" because I've never heard of housepet hens before coming to the BYC site.

Now if someone says they're keeping a cow in the garage or a goat in the living room, I'll know this whole thing is a put-on.

my 2 EE's are so precocious, they know they have me wrapped around their little toe. if i open the back door they come racing and if i don't close it fast, they're in! my BO and BSL walk right in and mosey around until i shoo them out. my SLW won't come across the threshold even if i lure her with yogurt and raisins. gotta luv em!

I have a little Serama living in my old cockatoo cage. Chickens are no different than exotic parrots as far as mess and poo. I don't see what the big deal is. Nobody would think anything was weird if you had a macaw in your living room, but a chicken??? Gross?? Come on now... Double standard there!

Cute ^^ I personally will never let a chicken in my house. Now of course, if it has an illness or it's in the brooder that's different. But, they have a nice coop that we paid big bucks for so why not use it?

I used to have a Polish that laid eggs right outside my sliding glass doors. Had to watch when you walked out.

I have one now, although I have birds I can't tell apart that will sneak into the kitchen and lay her egg in the floor near my sink.

I do have brooders inside, but I only keep them in here long enough to know they'll keep up in one of the brooders in the garage. I play musical brooders a lot, but as a house pet?

I'm animal crazy, but I don't want chickens in my house.

That being said I used to have lots of exotic birds of all birds. Lots of parrots. Even contained I got tired of bird poop, so chickens are actually easier. I've been in peoples houses where it's a joke if a cocketiel poops on you. I don't visit amny people.

I agree, to an extent. The parrots I've had were worse. I much prefer my "house chickens," a Dutch bantam roo and his two hens. I didn't start out to make them house chickens, but the Dutchies' personalities captured both my and my DH's hearts. The three of them sleep in a jumbo parrot cage (with nesting box), eat breakfast with the family, then go out for the day to their run off the porch. In the evenings, they like to perch on the back of my Lazy Boy and watch t.v. with me. I just keep a towel on it. They make the occasional mess elsewhere, but I have hard surface floors so it's a quick clean up. And they don't chew on things like parrots/cockatiels/parakeets. They also don't sharpen their claws on my furniture like cats or drool water on the floor like the dogs. They're no more "gross" inside than any animal. It's all in how you manage them and clean after them.

Spottedtail - There are folks with mini horses living in their houses! (not to mention pigs!). So I don't think it's a put-on. Although I'm with you, chickens can stay outside - thank you very much!

I admit to having newborn calves in my house during the cold winter days/nites, but I treat them like children: If you are well enough to run around the house, you are well enough to go outside.
If the patio door is left open, the freerangers often wander in. I wonder if it's because we brood them on the enclosed deck and they remember being inside.
Either that, or they think we have treats!
