It was always "soda" growing up in our house. My parents are both from NW PA. I say "soda" as do my kids. However, when my brother moved to Cinci and never came "home" he was converted to "pop".
Funny side story, when my dd was about 4 we were at a gathering and someone asked her is she wanted a "pop". She turns in a circle saying "daddy? where's daddy?". The woman was completely confused. i thought it was funny. Still do! My kids always called my dad "Popster".
So yeah, it's "soda" and I grew up in the south. Also, interestingly enough, If anyone ever asked if I wanted a coke, it was a coke I was served. So I know folks say that about the south...that every soda is a coke, but coke is a coke is a coke. Nothing else.
I grew up saying pop, moved to Minnesota and started saying soda, and continue to mostly say soda, but find myself saying pop too. I live in Texas now, and I think most people raised here say Coke. I still find it hard to specify "hot tea" when I want tea. Here if you order tea it is automatically thought to be iced tea, in the north, most people assume it will be hot tea.
