I am pondering the possibility of selling eggs from our 6 hens. I am not sure if you need to have any type of permit, because what if someone gets sick from your eggs? (Even though there is a better possibility of getting sick from grocery store eggs). So what do you guys do, how do you sell eggs? I was thinking of having a chloroplast sign that said

___ dozen eggs for sale, first come first serve
$2
I would replace the ___ with how many dozen of eggs that we have on hand for sale, and I would replace that with Velcro lettering. How is my idea?

P.S. not to be rude, but how much do you sell your eggs for per dozen? The local farm store sells their eggs for 5 a dozen, and that to me seems too crazy! I want to make it affordable! But then again, too affordable may not be good to do... Let me know!

If you need a permit varies from state to state and community to community. I don't know your state and local laws. and also feed, housing and other costs vary from one area to another along with the willingness/ability to pay any certain price. sorry I can't help more.

I've sold eggs in five of the six states in which I've lived; Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, California, and Hawaii (Arkansas is the only state I've lived in where I haven't sold eggs) and have never had any kind of permit for selling them. Of course I've never advertised my eggs; I've always sold them by word of mouth to neighbors in the areas where I've lived. Most recently I've been selling eggs for $3.50 per dozen in Hawaii.

Can you get sued for getting a person sick, after selling them eggs? Has this happened to you, or have you heard of this happening?

There are no written documents or guarantees with the sell of our eggs, so I would be surprised if the buyer had any real case. I've never heard of it happening and it's certainly never happened to us in all these years.

It really would be on a case by case basis.
If you were selling without proper permits and testing done then you very well could end up in legal trouble. However, I believe the chance of this happening would be quite low.
Certain areas have stricter codes than others.

I was able to get 5 a dozen but I was selling duck eggs which makes a difference.

I believe local raised eggs are about 3.50 a dozen in my area.
