Exactly what I think, too. They want to be noticed.... stand out..... attention.

I agree with this.

It doesn't? I feel quite the opposite on that. They dress that way because they want to be labeled "that kind of person." What would you think if you were a patient in a hospital and your doctor or nurse came in dressed like this? Or, your dentist? I really doubt that any professional would even consider dressing like this. They are making a statement. A statement that could be a number of things, but one is not that of being a trustworthy, approachable, sweet, considerate, and kind person.

This is my opinion........

Well I'm not goth or "emo" but I do like the gothic style. I love the many different arm warmers that are out there. They're just too darn pretty. I like the many different styles there are, anything alternative.
There's no gothic kids at my school, at one time there was.. Nicest girl you could ever meet. She was very smart too. Sometimes the "average joe" looking folks are the ones to worry about when it comes to "weird".

I agree.
I have 3 different colors in my hair, I wear neons and the color black, band shirts, well I just like to dress comfortable. I have been called goth, emo, punk, but those things just ain't me. I've also been called a hipster

That isn't me either, lol.
I'm just that odd kid that likes odd animals and does odd things. I always have the urge to play in those playplaces at McDonald's but I know I can't because I'm too old. But they look so fun.

It has to do with what they are going through in life. In talking with my son during that period, he felt it displayed his disagreement with what society found acceptable. I can live with that!!

My kids can "express" themselves when they are out on their own. Not in my house..... In my house, they are MY children and they will be representing me, my family, and my wishes. They will have plenty of time as adults to do whatever they want to. My house, my kids, my influence, and my rules. Parents should be influencing and guiding their children, in my opinion. Isn't that what child-rearing is all about?

Personally, I don't like that "style," and I can honestly say that whether I did or not, my kids wouldn't be caught dead dressed like that. Thank God!

Parents do have a say in what they allow their kids to wear. I am not allowed to be thug tastic or wear goth clothes because my parents feel they are hideous. But I personally would not wear them.

To say that the way a person dresses in some way indicates their trustworthiness, sweetness, considerate nature or whether they are a kind person just floors me. Approachability, I can see, but honestly I would say that has more to do with other peoples hang ups. My son was what you would call "Emo" in high school. Died his hair funky colors, wore skin tight jeans and concert tshirts. He was also a member of the National Honor Society, taking all AP classes, worked as a life guard, volunteered his time to Toys for Tots. Was the kindest most paitent big brother to his younger siblings (3 of whom are adopted, 2 of those with some special needs). Now he is serving his country in the Air Force. Taking responsiblity for his own life and education so that he wont be bogged down with student loans 5 years from now and paying them off until he's 40. He also joined knowing his father and I could never in a million years pay for his schooling on a military income ourselves. He is one of the sweetest, kindest, most considerate human beings I have ever come across in my life. He is giving up a lot serving his country, but he is proud of himself in knowing he is bettering himself in the process. Should a "professional" dress in such a manor? That all depends on their profession. Would I care if my doctor, nurse or dentist dressed in any which way in their down time? Heck no, as long as they were professional while at work.

I do foster care, and so i see LOTS of different kids "styles"...

The simple fact is they ARE judged on what they wear and how they look..
Its just a simple FACT.. IMO
This is one thing i teach my kids... you WILL be judged in society for how you represent yourself to others.
When they go to apply for a job.. etc.. you WILL look decent and respectable and "normal".. period.
Its real life... deal with it.
But ya know what... when you come home and you want to wear your baggy pants..(with-in reason..) I usually dont say anything unless its really bad or disrespectful..
I havent had a goth kid for a while.. but theres only so much i will tolerate with that look... i dont tolerate all the doom and gloom attitude and clothes and crazy make-up... and that blackness and morbid stuff... no i dont tolerate that junk.
Simply put... you live in my house and i have to be seen with you in public...
lol.png

Besides,.. letting your kids WALLOW in that type of morbid style isnt really healthy for them...
If you live/think like that every day... than thats what you become inside... sad...gloomy....
Thats NO way for a healthy kid/PERSON to live...

Should people judge them?? No not really, cause many/most really are good kids with issues they need help with...
But, if you put yourself out there as as "weird".... well, expect to be seen as that.

Now if i had a kid that was a healthy and happy kid that just wanted to be silly and dye their hair a different color for a while..i would probably let them do it... just for fun..
But again... not the goth, doom and gloom stuff...

I think its okay to let a kid express themselves with-in reason... to be a little different, have their own style...
As long as its respectful and healthy, NOT morbid and gloomy.
Just MY opinion..

ETA:And no, Kathy... I do NOT want a goth doctor treating me...(that there IS a scary thought!!!)

Another ETA: I have a kid now that wears his pants down past his butt.. (its just how he grew up, inner city kid)..It drives me NUTS! BUT, hes been doing sooo good here and not in trouble ONE time, and very respectful to us, and doing good in school for the first time! On the football team and just doing good...... sooo... i have to pick and choose my battles...
So.... when hes with us in public, the pants come up... but when he goes to school... whatever... i'm not stressing it.
BUT i swear that kids gonna get a bad wedgie someday from me...

Agree with you again, Red! I work in psych, and I worked with kids for nearly 20 years. I have seen much the same as you speak of.

Easy to say, "none of us should be judging others by what they wear," but come on..... we all do.
