Chicklover, I see your Adam Lambert and raise you a Davey Havok (with......computer edited pixelated vampire teeth? Ah well):

Emo hair aside, I've already informed my husband that I am marrying that man's voice and vocabulary. He's cool with it.

As an aside, some people dress that way precisely because most people do judge others so readily. It is a super easy way to weed out judgmental people from non in your daily interactions, and to help easily guide interactions based upon how people treat others.

Nor was I trying to say they did!

It is a photo I think sums up the topic of judgement based upon clothing or other styles nicely, especially as emo and punk have some similar strains. If (second wave) ska is the kid brother of punk, emo is punk's love child . Goth is related to them through uncle metal.

No issues as long as behavior is ok. Not sure what EMO even is. I recently found a few pics of myself as a teen....with a mohawk, lol. I was a nice kid.The tough look kept the bullies a bay.

As far as I'm concerned, its just hair and make-up, especially with the younger kids. I think many of the goth/emo kids tend to be a bit more willing to express themselves, and perhaps a bit more creative. Certainly the goth clothing style takes a bit more thought and effort than jeans and a t-shirt.

My middle school son is into the skater look, a make-up and dye free looks that is some of the same elements of the goth look. His entire wardrobe is black, red or white...but he will also wear a suit on gamedays or for choir concerts. His jeans are skinny, but he likes the ones with some stretch, like super skinny jeans have. He likes the stretch because they are more comfortable when he BMXs. He would love to have hair that does something other than curls. His curls are about 4 shades of blond, all over his head, and he HATES them. I expect him to ask to be allowed to dye his hair any day now.

Yes people judge others by their looks; and the goth look is provoking. That is part of its appeal. But I see it as more of a fashion statement, and for most people any fashion is a phase. In many ways, cliques in schools are a way to define yourself. Your way of dressing, particularly in high school, makes it easy for people to place you. While I haven't seen many goth professionals, most of them are smart enough to know what is appropriate for what venue. I've seen plenty of professionals who totally punk out for an evening, do biker chic for the road rallies, and others that do the hippy look.

Living where I do, I see lots of professionals with tattoos, and piercings. When I was a kid there wouldn't have been a single person with a facial piercing or more than one tattoo working in any professional environment. The tattoos would all have been military related. Now teachers, doctors, lawyers, programmers, and librarians have visible tattoos and facial piercings. Goth might move into professional life too.

I absolutely agree here. People do judge a book by its cover. All I'm saying is that how a kid dresses doesn't make them who they are. So as long as my kids are on the straight and narrow I don't care about the color of their hair.

But this is coming from a person married 20+ years to a Hispanic man, and the mother of an adopted biracial child who has a very racist mother who is WAY too concerned with outward appearances for my taste. It's not fun growing up watching someone judge people like that.
