We went to our 1st 4-H Poultry show this weekend and entered one bird. Plus we brought a bird for showmanship. This cockerel won 1st and Best Variety in his group. Is this a fluke thing or is he show quality? I'm not sure if he is pure Cochin.....

You have to consider. . . 4-H and County Fairs in most cases don't judge and show for the APA Standard of Perfection for the breed, so just about anything can win. That bird there could get best of variety and that is all. . . Personally I would DQ or severely fault him as a Cochin. He's got a small crest, signifying there's Silkie back there, and check his feet. . . Lots of frizzled Cochins still carry the 5 toes a Silkie does.

He is pretty though!

He could have been awarded Best of Variety because he was the only one of his variety at the show.
When that happens, it really doesn't tell you anything about your bird, good or bad, except that he wasn't disqualified for any reason.

That was quite blatant.

That roo certainly makes some tasty eye candy!

The OP asked if it was a fluke or if the bird was SQ. Just because it's pretty does not make it SQ. Further, Illia is correct. the level of standards is not generally as high in shows like 4H or county fairs. Unless it is specifically a APA sanctioned show.

True is true.
