YOu could put smooth (river type?) gravel on the bottom to keep claws off, it should work fine-

Get a pond filter for it and only turn it on when they are not in it, (save electricity).

wow thats an excellent idea!! the pond filter and the rocks....then you can once in a while empty it completely and power spray the rocks and refill....my soon to be spoiled spoiled ducks!

The rocks on the bottom collect every disgusting thing in the world. I do not think they will be as easy to rinse off as one might think.
