Do you vaccinate your chickens?

No I wouldn’t get them vaxxed. I had a cat that needed dental surgery, the vet insisted on him getting all his shots first, so I caved. The cat has one problem after another ever since. Could it be unrelated? I suppose….. but if you look into the history of vaccines, I think you might find what I did. Vaccines have never been about health…..it’s about money.

I don’t know if the chickens I have are vaccinated, but I won’t take them to get shots if I have new ones and know they’re not vaccinated, because finding a vet that works with chickens is like an odyssey here

For chickens, vaccines are usually given when they are day-old chicks.

If you buy chicks from a hatchery, and the hatchery does the vaccinations, that is very simple for you.

But if you hatch your own chicks, or the hatchery does not do vaccinations, it is much harder (or sometimes impossible) to get them vaccinated.

Yes, it can be very difficult to find a vet who will deal with chickens.

Awwwww I’m so sorry!How old was she? Maybe he gave her the shots sheneeded later/before? Or maybe Her body didn’t react well to the stitches or something? That’s horrible

That makes sense, then I guess my 4 newest chickens are vaccinated! And I won’t hatch myself so all the next chickens will also be.

Not all hatcheries vaccinate chicks. Many will only do it if you pay an extra fee.

So just knowing they come from a hatchery does not tell for sure whether they are vaccinated or not.

If you ordered the chicks directly from the hatchery, you can check your receipt to see what you paid for, and you can check the hatchery's policy/prices on vaccination.

If you bought the chicks from a store that orders from a hatchery, you can call (or visit) the store and ask. They may know whether the chicks were vaccinated, or they may know which hatchery (which lets you check the policies of that hatchery), or they may not know. (I think it's common for one person to order the chicks, and the rest of the employees to know nothing about the details.)

So you might be able to find out, but you might not.

Do I trust vaccines for chickens? Yes, though I understand their limits.

Do I vaccinate my birds? No. I hatch my own, and my primary objective is to raise chicks well suited to my grounds. If they can't fight off what's already here, I don't want them.
