Do you wear a helmet every time you ride?

I once picked up a saying: "If you think your styled hair is more important than your brain, it probably is."

I wear a helmet every time, no exceptions. I haven't ridden in a while but when I get back into it, I'm considering taking up English in part because it's 'more acceptable' to wear helmets.

My two best friends also want to start riding, but don't want to wear helmets. I may not ride with them.

Every time. Grandpa had a rule that it was helmet and boots or no riding. I make my boys wear them for everything, bikes, horses, skateboards, fencing. Frankly I don't care if they hate the fashion, we have not spent everyday since they were born educating them for them to bust thier heads open and loose that hard work. If you ask them they'll tell you "we spend too much on my schooling to break my brains".

Although everyone on the ranch just wears a cowboy hat to ride, I do not know anyone that rides without boots. My FIL and husband both are neurotic about it, and they're not exactly worry-warts. They've just seen their fair share of people being dragged. They won't have anyone even sit on a horse in anything but boots.

Do I wear a helmet on a horse? No
My motorcycle? Yes
Seat belts in a car? Yes
Seat belts on a tractor? Yes

Do I think any of them should be mandatory? No

My biggest pet peeve is when people take the roll bar off there tractor and/or don't wear there seat belt on it.

13 years as a fireman/first responder an I never once saw a person hurt badly on horseback that a helmet would have helped. Saw many people die because of no seat belts an one person still alive because he was not wearing his. An I never saw a tractor incident that a seat belt an roll bar wouldn't have helped.

It's sorta funny to think that on a forum where everyone would agree that foam/bubblewrap around eggs will protect them in shipping - but do not all agree to protect their OWN noggins with the same care.

I don't judge - but facts are facts. A properly fitted, quality helmet that has not exceeded it's shelf life GREATLY increases your chances in case of an accident. Period. Is it 100%? No...show me how much in life is 100%...other than death...and taxes.

I live in Norco - Horsetown USA...and I think maybe 1-5% of the riders here wear helmets - at least, from what I've seen.

Cara, I have a Troxel Sierra, but I think helmet fit/comfort is a very individual thing, so what's comfortable for one person, may be awful for someone else. I've talked to several people who love the Tipperary helmets, but they give me a headache.

Yup, every time and my 17 students don't get on without a helmet either.

That is a pic of me when I was 8 yrs old. I took a digger off of my little event horse and as he went by he caught me with his hind hoof. I ended up with a crushed zygomatic process/orbital, fractures nose and 48 stitches.

The specialists were convinced had I not had my helmet on I would most likely have had a brain injury or lost my sight.

I dont and have taken many a spill. I recently purchased one for my daughter though. and when she is feeling better she will be wearing it when she rides
