Do your chickens wander into the road?? HELP ME

We are on property and our chickens stay off the road. I think it is because we have them in the back of our lot and have various small and inexpensive homemade fences between their area and the road. They could easily get up there, but it is sufficiently difficult that the pickins' are just as good at the easier places to reach and they have what they need out there, places to dust bathe, green plants, water, plenty of bugs, and I always offer food in their feeder inside the coop. They seem to not want to be too far from the coop and being able to see the coop/feeder and they get treats when they return at night. Since our coop is not visible from the road they have never made it up there. But try setting up a flock block or something in the area where you want them to hang out or find other means to attract them to the area you want them in until such time you can make some fences. People on my road don't slow down for a sign that says there will be children so I doubt a chicken sign is going to do enough for you. We also made a large pen for them to be in when the timing for free ranging wasn't good, such as neighbor dog running loose on road. That way we hope they get the best of both worlds, protection and some time to free range as well.

Would it be okay for a cow producer to let his cows to have free access to a public highway? Probably not. Put up a fence to keep your chickens on your property. Having a chicken dead might be the least of your worries if someone gets into an accident due to your negligence.

I understand your point, but having an accident with a cow and having an accident with a 5 lb chicken is a little different in my book. And I dont live on a public highway, I live on a dinky road in the country. I'm not an irresponsible person who doesnt care, thats why I am here asking for any suggestions from people of the same experience.

I realize 99% of people will not endanger themselves to avoid a chicken, squirrel, rabbit, etc. and nor should they....

The place I'm talking about is between Brisben and S. Oxford on the west side--big barn. Always chickens along the highway--guy sells eggs and roosters.

I will have to look next time I'm in the neighborhood!

Whats scary is I am in the minority if it is safe to do so I will slam on my brakes for as much as a bird. My fiance used to yell at me and say its just a bird. Now he does the same thing. lol I am growing on him. That being said I will not endanger my life, my children's life, or another persons life to avoid hitting an animal. I wish there were more people out there that cared. I know in some areas that it is illegal to just keep on driving if you hit some animal. That being said the person whose animal you hit could also receive a fine. At least stop if for nothing else but to let someone know.

I live in a rural farm community where letting animals run loose is the norm, no not saying its the best thing and I keep more of mine contained than most do. Unfortunately 2 miles down the road from me is a racetrack where every friday during the summer we get lots of drunk drivers and race fans flying down the road trying to impersonate the race car drivers. I wish I could get the cops to come and do radar on the road they could issue so many tickets and not just on Friday.
