Do your chickens wander into the road?? HELP ME

I don`t know what it is but they know where you do not want them to go and that is where they go. I did the same as you. I let them free range until on day they dicovered the one neighbor that is close.I put up poultry netting to keep them from going there but they walked around it. All of my other neighbor are far away. I can not even see their houses from here. The neighbor did not mind and thought it was cute the way the roo would walk with me to the mailbox. Chicken will tear up a flower bed so befor it got to that I decided to pen them up. I did not want to but what are you going to do. I feel bad cause I have plenty of land.

I am thinking of putting up a sign as well. I wasn't sure if it would be a good idea. What are you planning on using to make it? Definitely a good idea. My fiance wants a children at play sign put up by the town but good luck getting that done. We have had people tear down the road at probably around 100mph its just a matter of time before someone is killed.

I am just going to paint some plywood a pretty color and paint "Please watch for chickens" or "chicken xing" or "free range chickens may be loitering in the road" or something like that & maybe stencil a border or something to make it look attractive.

I may be able to recruit someone to draw something for me which would be nice.....

As you can see that is open bone and he did not make it.
Please try something to keep them safe.

And for sign idea:

Or you can post the sign that the farmer in this joke used:

Great to see a neighbor here!

The place I'm talking about is between Brisben and S. Oxford on the west side--big barn. Always chickens along the highway--guy sells eggs and roosters.

Uggggh! I've been frantic for a few days now. Suddendly after 4 months my chickens have decided that they like to cross the road! Friday was my first casualty, poor thing! Don't know why they go across they have 2 acres of free ranging surrounded by corn fields. They love to be out so much, but I fear they will cause an auto accident and I will somehow be held responsible! Today everyone was locked up, just because I can't spend my day chasing chickens! I can't fence in the front yard, too expensive! I was thinking of enlarging thier run this week, but they sure will miss the bugs and grass. Or do I just let them go and hope for the best?

Would it be okay for a cow producer to let his cows to have free access to a public highway? Probably not. Put up a fence to keep your chickens on your property. Having a chicken dead might be the least of your worries if someone gets into an accident due to your negligence.

I have just 1.5ish acres, much of which is wooded. Most of the time, my chickens stay on my property - and frequently in the woods. But especially when the weather's nice, or in the evening, for some reason, they think it's time to go for a walk.

Happily, i can get them all back pretty fast. I have a call that they recognize to mean "i have treats for you," and they all come running/flying squawking back very quickly.

I've thought about putting up a sign (most of my neighbors are very understanding about the chickens), but i haven't decided what it should say.

I've considered something like, "Wandering Road Chickens Provided for Ambience, courtesy of ..... Tips Accepted." But i don't have the guts to put up something like that...yet.

i think any sign you put up should be as simple and bright as possible remember drivers only glance at signs unless looking for something specific. picture of a chicken BEWARE xing
