Docile chicken breeds

The egg color really doesn' matter much, but I just thought it could narrow it down to who actually laid it. For some reason, I thought that Wyandotte were smaller birds.
Nope. Mine were large enough to be meat birds.
You may be confusing Wyandottes with Sebrights, who are small.

Speckled Sussex, Wyandottes, Buff Orpingtons and Barred Rocks are probably your best bets. Throw in a Black Copper Marans and an Ameraucana and you have a colorful egg basket! If they REALLY want a pet, though, Silkies are the most docile chickens I've ever seen. And the stupidest.

I went a saw some speckled Sussex and the gold and silver Wyandottes, and really like them!! I' m thinking of maybe buff orps, black sex links, barred rocks, and easter eggers too, so far. Before I know it, I'll have to build a huge coop to hold them all.
Will the silkies and the other breeds get along with each other?

Hi all! I' new here and wanting to start raising dual purpose chickens in the next month or so. I would like to have a couple hens a piece that lay brown , white, and a different colored egg, ( im thinking easter eggers at the moment). With having grandchildren, it would be preferred if they were docile and not necessarily the type that prefers free ranging. As I know, there are many factors involved, and there's no guarantee for temperament, I would like to know what you all prefer. If it makes any difference, i live in middle/east Tn.

Thanks in advance.
Buff Orpington :celebrate

Silkies are a "special needs" breed and should be kept in their own coop.

I personally have had zero issues mixing them. Others have, though. My current lead cock is a buff silkie and he rules over birds easily twice his size.
Show quality Silkies might be more prone to getting beat up. I had a SQ one once; he was good with the hens but fought with the other males too much.

Too funny.

Just chiming in to agree with a bunch of the previous posters! I have LOVED all of my Barred Rocks and Buff Orpingtons. All have had awesome temperaments. If you get breeder birds rather than hatchery, they will make better meat birds IMO as they are much bigger.

We also have had in the past and really liked, Speckled Sussex, Wyandottes and Delaware.
