Eww I know, or dog had that happen years ago. A few years later I got my first job at a groomers. I basically washed dogs. I learned about why they need there glands emptied. By they way, never get a job at a groomers. I thought it would be fun because I love animals. I quickly learned it isn't. I always thought it would be funny if I got famous someday and was asked what my worst job was. I think I would win. Anyway, infection is one issue, but have you ever had them empty on the carpet? NOT FUN.

Just to let you know, there is no difference in expressing *ThOsE* glands in a tail or tail-less dog. Some dogs are just prone to impaction, and need expression done every 3-4 weeks, otherwise the liquid becomes too paste like and will be very hard to express without sedation...or worse becomes impacted resulting in a ruptured gland, which is actually commonly seen in a vet hospital. Most of the owners that come in with this problem had no idea that those glands even existed.

Edited to say that I'm very annoyed that the word "an*l" was automatically edited to "picky". Yes, kids read this site, but that is a scientific word used to describe our animals bodies. I would find it annoying if any other word or adjective was used. I would rather hear a child sound educated by saying "an*s" than "po*p hole"

If you are going to sale these pups then I think you should docl their tails. The reason is that the people that buy them might go ahead and dock the tails once they buy them and that is harder on the pups then doing them when they are just a couple of days old. If they are done when they are older they have to be put to sleep to do it and if it is when they are a couple of days old they don't have to be put to sleep.

If I ever get a corgi or other puppy from a breeder I will have my name put on a waiting list an demand the tail be left

I've stayed out of this docking tail conversion on purpose for a long time....but I thing I want to add,

There are soooo many breeds of dogs out there that are the result of human selective breeding. When a mutation results, we often try to keep it and that's how different breeds were created.

There are, for examples, bulldogs and pugs. They have breathing problems. They are cute with smushed faces. BUT, let me say it again, they have breathing problems. So it's not okay to remove the tail of a neonate puppy but it's okay to let these breeds go throughout life never being able to breath right???

Shar pei...lots of wrinkles...cute....BUT major, major skin problems and many have to have the skin above their eyes tacked back.

daschunds and corgis....loooong backs....major spinal problems; they get hurt very easily.

I could go and on about problems in breeds that people have created because it's "cute." For those of you against tail docking, you need to be fair in the way you evaluate the ways we "customize" our dogs.

On a second note, I have never seen a complication from a neonate tail docking (adults are different) or dewclaw removal. I have seen MANY problems with adult dogs getting their tails smashed and degloved (where the skin is stripped from the tail) or throwing their tail out of alignment/breaking it.

I have seen problems with ear crops. They are done when the puppy is older. I don't think they should be done because of the recovery time or the possiblity for complications.

I left my first Great Dane natural. He had chronic ear infections And his tail bruised my legs, knocked over my kids and covered my fridge with a frequent spatter of blood(happy tail).Second Dane-cropped and docked. No problems. My curent Great Dane mix wasn't done because my vet was out of town and her sub thought it was immoral. I caved and Mag and I have paid with 9 years of semi-constant ear infections. My next dog will be a properly clipped Dobe.

Come watch my heeer work cows and tell me she can't turn quickly. My dog scoots her butt on the ground at times so I'm sure that not having a tail isn't preventing her from doing so.
