Tried to get a group shot, but I could NOT get my duckies in a row!
Hahahaha!
See what I did there?!

Oh - and it is quite obvious when they are swimming that their feathers are starting to come in. I can also see the beginnings of tail feathers. It is mind boggling how quickly they grow!

ETA: You can actually see the feathers coming in on Marmalade's back in this picture.
:love
And another application of the duck-poop jar was necessary!
The local farm store sent me an e-mail today, advertising their chick weeks!
Dang! Now i can't go there for the next six weeks… 😛

Day 13 - Sunday 2/21/21

They got to play outside for a bit while I set up their new brooder. I decided to go bigger today because I'll be gone for 3 days while I help my mom move to So Cal. I figured this would stay cleaner a They got to play outside for a bit while I set up their new brooder. It was 65° outside. I decided to go bigger today because I'll be gone for 3 days while I help my mom move to So Cal. I figured this would stay cleaner a little longer because I know my hubby and/or son won't clean it 2x a day...

And here is the new brooder. It's not huge, but it's about 9 sq ft. I have a 2nd one just like it, and I can join them side by side, I think, if I get a little creative. I lined the sides with a plastic drop cloth I had in the workshop.

Outside play time is the best and the most important thing for little duckies! When the sun is shining their skin generates a ton of vitamins, they gobble down their first grit and learn how to forage and be ducks.
And the more play-time outside, the cleaner the brooder! - I have a duckling box, just a 2x2 meter box 50cm tall with chicken wire that i set down in the grass. Ducklings, food and water goes in, chicken wire lid and they can play outside. Next day the duckling box is moved to a new spot of grass.

Our front yard is ideal, actually. The grass area in front of our house is completely and securely fenced. But I have the top part of small animal cages I can plunk down in the grass that will keep them contained and protected from above.

Boy, they are tuckered out now! They only spent about 30 minutes outside, but they've done nothing but sleep since!
