does a rooster know when pullets are ready to mate.

yesterday i saw my four month old rooster mating a pullet (she is four month old also)he hung around her all day.than this morning he was hanging out with with another pullet.it reminded me of a cat in heat.i wonder if chickens give out some kind of scent when they are at the age to mate.

Good question. I don't know the answer but I think they know. I saw my 1 year old roo mating w/ my 18 week old pullet last week and I thought she was a bit young but she layed her first egg yesterday. So she must have been ready!
