Does any one know where to get african pygmy geese

Can't forget that many an expensive duck has dropped dead in quarantine. When it comes to importing birds, one pair is no pair.

Bottom Line: Get the idea of doing an import 'cheaply' out of your head, it's not going to happen. You scoff at the $3,000. US price tag but when it's all said and done you'll pay that anyways and you may have nothing to show for it.

Dr Todd or who ever you are or where ever you live.( canada Im pretty sure and not Antarctica )Im very much aware they could die in quarintine. And how in the heck do you know "many a duck" or any many animal for that matter has dropped dead at quarintine???!!! There wouldnt even be an agency if that was the case. You dont live in the USA . Im doing all this legwork and information search for me and anyone else it may help. Even it it doesnt work out for me pesonally. Sorry Im an optimist and oviously you are a pessimist. And my momma taught me If you cant say something nice about someone dont say nothing at all. I love your encouragement. Why do love this discussion? Do you LIKE to see people FAIL? Or am I missing something? And as MY FRIENDS

have pointed out numerous times I KNEW the price would probably be about the same. I wouldnt call it "scoffing at $3000" as you so finely put it. But in all , ALL mind you , their comments were helpful tidbits.

I don't know Dr Todd, or have much experience with birds either for that matter, but for most of my life (I started in the animal industry when I was 16 and I'll be 46 in June) I have worked every aspect of the live animal industry including collecting, importing, raising, breeding and selling exotic animals. In quarentine the lower end of the scale will not get you the same quality as the upper end of the price scale. Most of the time the birds are only seen by a F&W officer or customs agent on arrival, they are not seen by a vet unless you pay for it, the daily care is done by a minimum wage employee who throws food and water into the cage, sometimes just on top of the old food, and if it gets sick it isn't their problem. Remember the quarentine station is a business and their goal is not to save the animal but to make money and make sure that a disease is not spread outside of the particular station where the animals are kept. They get paid if your birds die the same as if they live so to them as long as a pathogen doesn't get out of their door, they have done their job. I mentioned in my first post on this thread if you put them into QT make sure you can visit (some don't allow it unless you are an approved person for the station) and check them daily if not several times a day to make sure they are getting the care they need. Also make sure if they show signs of something you have the athority to treat the birds, again they are considered successful if the birds die but the pathogen that killed them does not leave the facility. I have lost whole shipments of mammals that were a lot more expensive then $3000 per individual because the goal of the quarentine is not to save the animal on site but the ones outside the facility. The other thing to remember is to a quarentine station a chicken is the same as an ostrich or a macaw, the people on site may have never seen a pygmy goose or even cared for a duck in their lives so they just do what someone else tells them to do, give them food and make sure they have water. Not all of them are staffed the same and you have to do the research and leg work to make sure your birds are cared for, and even if not to your standards it needs to be monitored daily.

I am not trying to talk anyone out of this, it is what I love to do and there is no reason you shouldn't do it yourself as well, I'm just giving you the information I have so you can make an informed decision while choosing from your options. The health of the birds as individuals are your concern, not the QT stations. Your goals in quarentine does not always match the goal of the people in charge of your birds for those 30 days.

I dont know her neither or if she is a Dr or what. but to put her out of the way. It isnt What she said, Its the Way she said it. Im thick skinned though

What you told me about the care at quarantine Is kinda what I wondered about. Same thing with a lot of Zoo's too. I quess it's like that everywhere though. People that care and work at it right and the other like you mentioned. But now from what you also said" The station is a business." Im sure some talking to goes on when some of those exspensive losses occur. And I bet no one wants to hear that. I do know that 3ooo is truly not alot in the import business. Again I will say though I wanted to LEARN about this whole process (good and bad)Well not so much the bad ha ha.) I even like the constructive critisizm. And I appreciate everyones input, yours especially cause you are one of those people involved directly on this subject. Its just that people like the DR that dont bring anything to the table are why more people dont even TRY Try to find out about importing. Its definitely that kind of Attitude that put me off since I was 16 and over 50 now on checking in to this deal. And just so everyone knows. So far everyone I have talked to including the airlines , various brokers, both Los angeles and Maimi quarantine stations, Usda aphis and other individuals have All been very very helpful to me and also in the nicest possible way told me about the "crappy" parts of it and of course I knew they would be there. If any one else goes this distance. Thats something thats nice to know. Still plugging away though!!. Also Aldren if you want Pygmys from Sylvan Heights unfortunately they are all out for this year (they had a "run" on them. I called a good friend that worked there even try to get a pair for me yesterday thru him. Sorry, maybe next spring. Yesterday was the longest Ive ever talked to people on a phone in my whole life. No foolin!

And sorry I hijacked your thread on this "shipping adventure"

Not sure why you took offense to a reality of importing birds?

Having done a few myself I know all about the perils of imports and how much they cost.

I am merely pointing out a far easier way to wind up with a kiddie pool full of pygmy geese is to buy them in the US.

Edited to include: You'll also have no access to the birds in a USDA quarantine. Owners are not allowed to enter the buildings or even get near them.

Keep up the hunt, I think you'd do a quacktastic job with pygmy geese of all three species. When you breed them like crazy I hope the price goes down so more people can have them.

Most people dont know how to take you on here (BYC) DR Todd. Myself included. Because of some of the things you say and do. I dont know if you're young , bipolar , jokester or what? Your very last post was a classic example. With the kiddie pool comment or the emoticon deal. I know how I personally took it though! Any way I PM ed you. To clarify this and other things on future open forum discussions. Your friend ??? Shawn
